Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums pushed across a season-high seven runs in the first inning on Tuesday night and made it stand up, edging the Southern Illinois Miners 8-7 at Wuerfel Park.

The seven-run outburst actually came after the Miners had scored three runs in the top of the first inning against Tanner Tripp. Greg Harisis led off with a single and Scott Woodward walked before Jose Vargas smacked an RBI single to left field for the first run. After a groundout, Jovan Rosa hit a two-run double off the top of the wall in left-center to knot the game at three.

A walk and an error loaded the bases for Josh Miller, who poked a two-run single to right to give TC a 5-3 lead. Jeff DeBlieux continued the rally with an RBI single to left field before Harisis connected for an RBI hit, making it 7-3. A double play capped the seven-run frame.

The Beach Bums added on another tally in the second inning with Chris Cowell scoring Vargas on a single to push the advantage to 8-3. TC had the bases loaded with one out in the inning, but Britt Robertshaw struck out the next two batters, starting a string of 17 consecutive Beach Bums retired.

Southern Illinois chipped its way back into the game with an unearned run in the top of the third and a sacrifice fly in the fourth, but Tripp (3-8) retired nine of the last 11 he faced to earn a quality start and the victory. He allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits in six innings for his second straight win.

The Miners drew to within one in the eighth inning on a Matt Jones RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Niko Vasquez, but Will Rankin forced a fly out from Frank Martinez to keep the lead in tact. Rankin came back in the ninth to retire the side in order, earning his seventh save of the year.

Michael Carden (5-4) took the loss for the Miners, giving up all eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits in just 1.1 frames.

Winners of four in a row on its home turf, Traverse City will look to win the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Alex Phillips (4-7, 4.13) starts for TC while Southern Illinois will go with Anthony Montefusco (0-0, 0.00). One lucky fan will win a seven-day trip for two to Mexico courtesy of Passageways Travel and TVC Airport. Fans can listen to the broadcast starting at 6:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
