August 26, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
Joliet Slammers News Release
The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy- lost to Florence 6-1 on Tuesday at Silver Cross Field.
This game started as a pitcher's duel and was scoreless going into the top of the 5th inning. Andrew Strenge gave up a double to the first batter he faced in the game but then did not allow another hit until there were two outs in that 5th inning. He had walked two previous batters so the Gaby Juarbe base-hit drove in the Freedom's first run to give them a 1-0 lead. Sam Moore came on in relief and allowed an RBI single to Cole Miles and the score became 2-0. The Florence starter, Dave Middendorf, pitched well early too. He gave up a single in each of the first two innings and then retired seven straight before Adam Giacalone lined a single to right to start the bottom of the 5th. Seth Granger singled and then JD Dorgan reached on an error to load the bases. Giacalone scored on a wild pitch and that was all Joliet would get but the score went to 2-1. The score would stay 6-1 until the top of the 9th inning. Ethan Carter pitched three shutout innings of relief for Joliet until he allowed a 2-run homer to Jacob Tanis to make the score 4-1. Kevin McNorton came on and hit a batter and allowed a single. Those runners would score on a 2-run single from Juarbe off of Matt Crim. The four-run 9th make the score 6-1 and that is how the game ended. The loss ends the Slammers 3-game winning streak and is their 4th straight loss at Silver Cross Field. Middendorf went 7 innings and allowed one unearned run on six hits. Daniel DeSimone pitched the last two scoreless innings for the save, the teams 9th this month.
In the middle of the 8th inning, the Slammers gave away $250 to lucky fan, Sandy Marino, as part of their Amazing August promotion. Each home game in August will see one fan go home with at least $250 dollars. The higher that night's attendance, the higher the payout will be. The payout on Friday, August 1st to a lucky winner was $5000.
