Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - On the strength of a seven-run first inning the Delmarva Shorebirds coasted to an 8-3 over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
It was the first ever meeting between the Shorebirds (5-5) and the Pelicans (5-5) and it only took until the bottom of the first for the game to be broken open.
Greg Cullen started the frame for the Shorebirds with a base hit to left and Ryan Higgins followed with a two-bagger to put two on. Darell Hernaiz then bounced a grounder to third that resulted in an error, allowing a run to score and putting men on the corners. Isaac Bellony plated Higgins with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 and Mishael Deson followed with a double to knock in Hernaiz to push the Delmarva lead to 3-0. After Isaac De León walked, a wild pitch pushed both runners into scoring position. Josué Cruz brought both runners in with a base hit to center, going to second on the throw to the plate. After a groundout, Michael Mantecón reached on an infield single to score Cruz and moved to second on a throwing error. Cullen then walked and Higgins followed with his second double of the frame, scoring Mantecón, to cap the frame with the 'Birds ahead 7-0.
It stayed a seven-run cushion for Delmarva until the sixth when Ethan Hearn swatted a solo homer for Myrtle Beach, his first of the season, to make it 7-1.
Pete Crow-Armstrong chipped away at the deficit again for the Pelicans in the seventh, racing around the bases for an inside-the-park two-run homer, his first homer of the season, making it 7-3.
Delmarva got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame, with De León coming through with an RBI single to restore a five-run lead at 8-3, where the game would end.
Conor Grady (1-0) earned the win for Delmarva with three frames out of the bullpen, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out five without walking a batter.
Luis Devers (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Myrtle Beach as he conceded seven run (five earned) on five hits and two walks without recording a strikeout.
Although he didn't factor into the decision, Moisés Chace started for Delmarva and fired four shutout frames, striking out five. He has now twirled eight consecutive scoreless innings to start the year.
The Shorebirds and Pelicans tango again on Wednesday, April 20 at Perdue Stadium for game two of the series. Shane Davis (0-0, 3.68) is slated to go for Delmarva while Myrtle Beach sends out Tyler Schlaffer (0-1, 5.40). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
