Seven Late Runs Doom Snakes

Giving up seven runs in the final three innings the Calgary Vipers (16-13) were defeated 10-4 by the Strong Warriors of Maui (11-13) at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Trailing early in the game Calgary took a 4-3 lead in the third inning and held onto it until the seventh when they allowed seven runs and fell behind for good. Overall the offence mustered only four hits.

Mark Michael got the start for the Vipers and threw five innings while allowing one earned run and striking out four. Scott Watson (1-1) took the loss after allowing five runs in an inning and a third while Kevin Altman (1-1) took the win after allowing only two hits in six innings while giving up four runs. Mike Koons (1) recorded the save by tossing the final three innings of the game and not allowing a run.

Maui opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Steve Boggs tripled, Gered Mochizuki singled for a run batted in, J.J. Sherrill reached on a throwing error, and Mitch Einertson drove in a run with a base hit for a 2-0 lead.

Calgary answered in the bottom of the frame with two outs as Wilver Perez walked, Drew Miller was hit by a pitch, Justin Tellam walked to load the bases, and Louie Templeton came through with a clutch two-run single for a 2-2 tie.

The Strong Warriors took back the lead at 3-2 in the third when Einertson doubled and scored when Jose Sanchez reached on a fielding error.

The Vipers once again responded in the bottom of the inning as Jonny Kaplan walked, Perez was hit by a pitch, both runners executed a double-steal, and with two outs Justin Tellam came through with a two-run single for a 4-3 advantage.

Maui took back the lead in the seventh frame when Einertson tripled, Jowen Murray-Thornton singled in a run, Jose Sanchez doubled, Stephan Pearson was intentionally walked to load the bases, Patrick Rose doubled in two runs, and Matt Kavanaugh hit a sacrifice fly that scored two runs for a 8-4 score.

In the top of the ninth the Strong Warriors added on as Murray-Thornton and Rose singled while Kavanaugh knocked in two with a double for a 10-4 lead.

Calgary continues this four game series against the Strong Warriors of Maui on Friday June 24th at 11:05 AM with a Work Day/Sneak out of School Special, on Saturday June 25th at 5:05 before the game a Zumba Guinness World Record will be attempted along with the Inflatamaniacs performing, while on Sunday June 26th at 1:35 it will be Kids Day with the Inflatamaniacs back for a second day and a Family Pack for $60.00.

On Toonie Tuesday June 28th at 6:30 the Vipers will host Jose Canseco and the Yuma Scorpions for 80s Night. Canseco will be available to the media before the game at 4:00. The two teams will also play on Weiner Wednesday June 29th at 6:30 for $5.00 Student Night, on Thursday June 30th at 7:30 for FIREWORKS, on Canada Day Friday July 1st at 1:05 for Baseball Bonanza, and on Saturday July 2nd at 5:05.

The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
