Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO- The Calgary Vipers hold on to win 10-7 despite a late inning rally by the Outlaws.
The Outlaws ran out of the gate in a hurry against the Vipers Wednesday night. After a single by lead-off man Jay Pecci and a fielder's choice that caused the two players to switch places on the base paths, Jake Rife hit a double to send Hill to third. An Al Quintana ground out would send Hill home. With two outs and a man on third, Darrick Hale squeaked a ball passed the Viper's shortstop for a double to score Jake Rife and put the Outlaws up 2-0.
Calgary would do the majority of their damage in the 4th and 5th innings. The two, three, and four hitters in the lineup were responsible for all six runs in the two innings. The fourth inning started with a double by Aaron Dunsmore, a single by the next hitter, Wiver Perez, and a walk of Drew Miller to lead the bases. Jeff Giacomini would send Dunsmore and Perez home on a two RBI base knock. The Vipers would add another run later in the inning on a Louie Templeton two-out single to push Calgary ahead 3-2.
In the fifth inning, the Vipers scored all three of their runs with two outs. Dunsmore was the first to reach base on a double to right field. Calgary would hit back-to-back home runs off of Chico starter Travis Kane (1-3) to increase the lead to 6-2. The lead proved insurmountable despite the Outlaws scoring single runs in each of the next three innings, and adding two in the ninth. The Vipers mirrored the Outlaws run-for-run in the game's final three innings to hold off Chico for 10-7 victory. Calgary starter Rob Naegele (1-0) picked up his first win of the season; pitching five and two-thirds innings, while allowing three runs on six hits. The bright spot for the Outlaws came in the form of Darrick Hale. Hale came into the game hitting .258 but raised his batting average 30 points to .288 after going 3-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
The Outlaws will get a much deserved day off Thursday after playing seven games in just five days. The Lake County Fielders will come to town Friday for the first and last time to open a marathon series that features six games spread across nine days. Demetrius Banks (2-2) will get the ball to start the game, looking to avenge a 1-3 loss he suffered in his last start against Calgary.
