Harrisburg Senators News Release
Reading, PA - The heroes were aplenty for the Senators on Friday night in Reading as the Sens knocked off the Reading Phillies 8-6. After several tough games, the offense exploded on Friday night for 15 hits and scored in the last four innings in the win.
For the first time this season, the Senators received a lead-off home run as Mike Daniel hit his fourth home run of the year off of Reading starter Carlos Carrasco to give the Sens a 1-0 lead. Roger Bernadina would follow with a one-out double and then score on a base hit off the bat of Luke Montz to give the Sens a 2-0 lead.
However, the Reading Phillies came back with three of their own in the bottom of the first, the first of which came on a disputed home run off the bat of Jason Donald to trim the lead to 2-1. On that play, originally called a foul ball, Senators manager John Stearns was ejected after the call was reversed from a foul ball to a home run. Greg Golson followed with a home run to tie the game for the Phillies at two. They took the lead on a run scoring single by Brad Harman scoring Jeremy Slayden. Senators starter Beltran Perez settled down though and shut down the Phils until two-outs in the fourth inning.
The Sens tied the game in the top of the fourth when Montz doubled, the second of his three hits, then eventually scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
The game didn't stay tied long as the Phillies broke through with two-outs in the fourth off of Perez. Golson was hit, Lou Marson walked and Joey Hammond followed with a three-run home run to give Reading a 6-3 lead. That, though, would be the last hit Reading would get on the night.
The Sens started chipping away in the sixth when Montz scored on a double play ball to make it 6-4. In the seventh, pinch hitter Andrew Lefave walked and eventually scored on a single by Roger Bernadina to make it 6-5.
With Reading closer Patrick Overholt on the mound to start the eighth, Luis Jimenez hit the first pitch of the inning over the right field fence and into the night to tie the game at six. In the ninth with one out, the Senators rallied again. William Bergolla doubled, Bernadina walked and then Montz lined a single to left to tie the game. Jimenez then came up again against Overholt, and won the battle again, drawing a bases-loaded walk to give the Senators a 7-6 lead. Ofilio Castro followed with an infield single and the Sens had an 8-6 lead.
Josh Perrault, who had pitched a perfect eighth inning stayed in the game for the ninth. He retired the side in order and earned his second win of the year. All told, the relief corps of Levale Speigner, Tim Bittner and Perrault combined to go five innings, allowing no hits and retiring the final eleven batters of the game.
Of the Sens 15 hits, Bergolla had four, Montz had three and now leads the Eastern League in batting, while Daniel, Bernadina and Jimenez all chipped in with two.
With the win the Senators move to 31-22 on the season while the Reading Phillies dropped to 21-31. Coupled with Bowie's loss to Akron, the Senators regained a tie for the lead.
The series with Reading continues on Saturday night at First Energy Stadium in Reading as the Sens send RH Shairon Martis to the mound against RH Kip Bouknight for the R-Phils.
