Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- In a bizarre seventh inning, the Defenders lost a one-run lead as they fell to the visiting Binghamton Mets by a final of 5-3.
Paul Oseguera commanded the bump for Connecticut on Friday night as he dealt two scoreless innings to begin his start. The third inning, conversely, was a different story.
Jonathan Malo led off the third frame with his first homer of the year that cleared the third tier of billboards in left field. Emmanuel Garcia got aboard on a hit by pitch and Jose Coronado punched him home on a slap double to make it 2-0 B-Mets.
Nothing doing in the fourth inning, but the Defs cracked the score column in the home half of the fifth. Dave Maroul slashed a two-out double to right field to spark a short rally. Kyle Haines smoked a single past a diving glove at third to bring home Maroul and Antoan Richardson smoked a line drive up the middle to plate Haines and tie the game at 2-2.
Steve Palazzolo inherited the baseball for the Defs in the sixth inning as he faced the minimum to get out of the frame unscathed.
Travis Ishikawa led off the bottom of the sixth with a boom. On a 3-0 pitch, Ishikawa pulverized a fastball way over the right field wall as the Defenders claimed a 3-2 lead.
Palazzolo continued his relief in the seventh as thing came unraveled for Connecticut. Palazzolo hit not one, not two, but three consecutive batters to load up the bags with no one out. In an equally abnormal turn of events, Adam Witter was called for catcher's interference as pinch-hitter Eric Reed was awarded first base as Ambiorix Concepcion crossed home to make it 3-3. Palazzolo continued on and dazzled for two batters, striking both out without missing a step and for a moment, it looked as if the big righty was going to leave with a tie through six and a half. But, with two down Dan Murphy delivered a two-run single to left as the Mets re-gained their lead, 5-3.
Connecticut couldn't get anything else going offensively as the 5-3 score proved to be the final.
Steve Palazzolo was credited with the loss, Salvador Aguilar earned win number five and Eddie Kunz secured his eleventh save of 2008.
The Defenders and Mets will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 5:05pm. Tickets are available for the double dip at ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
