Austin Spurs News Release
AUSTIN, TEXAS - Trailing by as many as 11 points in the first quarter, the Austin Toros used a strong second quarter to build a 17 point lead as they sailed to a 116-101 win over the Fayetteville Patriots Thursday night at the Austin Convention Center.
Toros forward Marcus Fizer followed up a D-League season high 44-point performance from Tuesday night with 36 points against the Patriots connecting on 14-of-23 baskets including seven rebounds, three assists and four blocked shots.
Newcommer Quannas White, who joined the Toros less than a week ago, provided a spark from the bench recording nine points and three assists in the second quarter to ignite a 30-12 rally that would put the Toros in the driver's seat for the remainder of the game.
Led by Daniels and Dickens, the Patriots put together a 13-3 run to close the third quarter, 87-75.
The Patriots pulled to within six points with eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter following a three-point basket by forward Kaniel Dickens. But Andre Emmett would answer the Patriots run by scoring 11 of the Toros next 17 points. Emmett would finish the game with 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting.
"One of the best things I saw Andre do tonight was pushing it up the floor after a rebound and then pulling it back out," Toros coach Dennis Johnson said. "He ended up making the right decision and as a result ended up hitting the three - that's what I need him to do."
Daniels led the way for the Patriots (14-28) with 20 points and nine rebounds. Dickens followed closely with 19 points and four rebounds. Kevin Johnson added 15 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Ramel Curry chipped in with 18 points and six assists and White recorded 11 points connecting on 5-of-6 baskets in the Toros (22-20) winning effort.
The Austin Toros travel to Little Rock to take on the Arkansas RimRockers on Saturday, March 25 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Alltel Arena. The Fayetteville Patriots continue their three game road trip on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. as they take on the Albuquerque Thunderbirds at the Tingley Coliseum.
