Tulsa 66ers News Release

TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa 66ers will host a free Coaches Helping Coaches Clinic at the Expo Square Pavilion on Monday, March 27 from 5 - 7 p.m. This is a chance for all area coaches to hear coaching tips and philosophies from one of the best professional basketball coaches in the NBA Development League.

Tulsa 66ers Head Coach Joey Meyer will cover defensive, ball-handling/shooting, and rebounding/fastbreak drills that will instill basketball fundamentals in players of all ages. Part of the program will include a chalk talk session & on-court demonstrations with Coach Meyer.

Meyer brought a wealth of NBA D-League head coaching experience to Tulsa's basketball operations department, having coached in the league since its inception in 2001. A former head coach at DePaul University, Meyer is the only D-league coach to win back-to-back league championships.

Recognized as one of the most successful college basketball coaches in the nation, Meyer served as head coach for the DePaul Blue Demons for 13 seasons (1984-1997), posting a 231-158 record, including six 20-win seasons, seven NCAA Tournament appearances, and three NIT bids. He was named CBS Chevrolet Coach of the Year in 1987 and won the Great Midwest Conference regular season championship in 1991-92.

The son of Hall of Fame coach Ray Meyer, who passed away last week, Joey competed for four seasons with the Blue Demons (1968-71) scoring 1,233 career points and serving as co-captain during his senior season under his father's direction. He followed his father's career path, serving as the freshman head coach from 1971-1972 and the junior varsity head coach from 1972-73. After serving as an assistant coach on his father's DePaul staff for 11 years, Meyer took over the head coaching reins in 1984.

"The NBA Development League represents the future of our game and a tremendous training ground for the players and coaches," said Tulsa 66ers team president Joe Berry. "It's critical that these individuals have access to the best coaching techniques available so that the sport of basketball continues to grow."

In addition, clinic participants are invited to the Tulsa 66ers home game on Tuesday, March 28 at 7 p.m. for a Q&A session following the game with Coach Meyer and various players on the 66ers squad.

Tickets for the game start as low as $10 per seat and includes a hot dog, chips and a drink. For more information, contact Blaine King at (918) 585-8444.
