Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID - The Colorado Eagles (35-26-4) scored three goals on 21 second-period shots, skating to a 4-2 win over the Idaho Steelheads (35-22-9) at CenturyLink Arena on Saturday night.
Trent Daavettila notched a goal and an assist on the evening to lead the Eagles, giving him 70 points on the season to move into second in the ECHL scoring race.
The game was tied 2-2 in the second period when Daavettila fought off checks from three different Steelheads defenders and carried the puck from the left-wing corner to the front of the net. On his backhand, Daavettila slipped a pass to the left post where Darryl Bootland was waiting to tap in his 12th goal of the season at 8:19 of the period for a 3-2 Colorado lead.
The Eagles expanded on that lead just under eight minutes later when Johnny Lazo collected the puck off a faceoff win by Daavettila and wired a drive past the glove of Branden Komm to make it 4-2. It was Lazo's third goal in the two game series and his 11th in the last 13 games.
The Steelheads launched 14 shots on Eagles' goaltender Kris Lazaruk in the third period but weren't able to break through. The best chance came in the final 90 seconds, when Emil Molin's redirection of a Zack Kamrass feed went off of Lazaruk's shoulder, off the cross bar, and over the net.
After Kyle Kramer scored his 17th of the season, and sixth against Idaho, to open the scoring at 5:41 of the first, it was Molin who responded for the Steelheads. On the power play, Molin camped at the bottom of the right circle and took a beautiful cross-ice feed from Carson McMillan to bury his 21st goal of the season, tying him for the team lead and tying the game at 9:49 of the first.
The Eagles took a 2-1 lead just 1:46 into the second when Daavettila collected a rebound off the boards behind the Steelhead net and tucked it behind Branden Komm. Idaho tied it 2-2 on Tommy Fallen's fourth goal of the season, a wrister from the top of the left circle off a Molin feed. Molin and Fallen both had a goal and an assist in the game.
The Steelheads are winless in their last three games, going 0-2-1, the first time they've gone three games without a win since December 10th. The loss also snapped Idaho's eight-game points streak on home ice.
With the loss, the Steelheads dropped three points behind Fort Wayne in the Western Conference, while the Utah Grizzlies pulled within one point in the West Division. The Steelheads hold a game in hand on Utah.
The Steelheads face the Grizzlies for the final time this season on Wednesday at CenturyLink Arena, with puck-drop scheduled for 7:10pm MT. The game is available on Cable One, ECHLTV, and 1350KTIK.
