Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK - For the second time in three days, the Houston Astros have called on the Round Rock Express pitching corps.
The Astros announced Thursday that right-handed starter Russ Ortiz was released after allowing nine hits and nine earned runs in 2 1/3 innings to send the Astros to their fifth loss in six games at Chicago's Wrigley Field. The move made room on Houston's roster for right-handed reliever Sammy Gervacio.
Right-handed starter Bud Norris was called-up by the Astros on Tuesday night and made his Major League debut against the Cubs just hours after landing in Chicago on Wednesday. Norris allowed one run and struck out four over three innings of work.
Thursday's promotion to the Major Leagues marks the first for Gervacio, who is 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA and 48 strikeouts against 20 walks in 35 relief appearances for Round Rock.
The 24-year-old Gervacio has not allowed an earned run in 21 of his outings and carved out a 2.45 ERA over nine June appearances.
Gervacio is holding Triple-A hitters to a .244 batting average and has walked just four batters in his last 11 efforts dating back to June 23.
The move marks the 88th of the season for the Express.
