Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The New Orleans Zephyrs defeated the Nashville Sounds, 7-4, in a rain-shortened contest on Thursday evening at historic Greer Stadium.
Almost the entire contest was played in rainy conditions, culminating in a stoppage of play with two outs in the top of the ninth inning.
New Orleans first baseman John Lindsey went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs on the evening.
The visitors jumped out to a quick lead against Sounds starter Chase Wright, plating three runs in the top of the first inning. Alejandro De Aza and Manny Mayorson opened the contest with consecutive singles before both scored on Cameron Maybin's triple to right-center. Maybin later came plateward on a Jai Miller sacrifice fly.
The Sounds got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the first when Mat Gamel and Brendan Katin drove in Jason Bourgeois (3-for-5) and Hernan Iribarren with RBI groundouts, making it a 3-2 contest.
Wright helped his own cause in the second by delivering a two-out RBI single to center to bring home Johnny Raburn and square the score at 3-3.
The Zephyrs pulled back in front, 4-3, in the top of the third when De Aza scored on Lindsey's two-out RBI single to left.
Lindsey added to the visitors' lead in the top of the fifth with a two-out, two-run homer to dead center off Wright, the first baseman's team-leading 17th longball of the year.
New Orleans tacked on another run in the seventh against Wright as Lindsey recorded his third run-scoring hit of the night, an RBI single to plate De Aza.
Sounds cleanup hitter Brendan Katin drew a bases-loaded walk from New Orleans reliever Willie Collazo in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the score to its final 7-4 standing.
Zephyrs starter Ryan Tucker (1-2) earned his first victory of the year with a quality start, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings of work.
Chris Mobley earned his third save of the year by working a scoreless bottom of the eighth for New Orleans.
Wright (6-6) took his first loss since May 29 for Nashville after surrendering seven runs on 10 hits in seven frames of action.
The teams will conclude the four-game set with a 7 p.m. finale on Friday evening. Right-hander Mike Burns (7-2, 2.55) will man the bump for the Sounds to face New Orleans southpaw John Koronka (4-7, 4.50).
