Second effort evens series for Quebec
September 7, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release
The Spirit couldn't keep pace with the Quebec offense on Thursday night as the Capitales powered their way to a 9-5 victory in the second game of this best-of-five first round playoff series on a foggy night at the New Fraser Field.
Quebec jumped out to a quick lead in the contest, pushing a run across the plate in the second. Eddie Lantigua led off the inning with an infield single and moved from first to third on a bloop base hit down the right field line from Olivier Lepine. Simon Legare sent Lantigua home on an RBI single for the game's first run.
North Shore took their only lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Ricardo Cordova led off the inning with a double, and Chris Rowan sent him home with an RBI base hit up the middle. Brooks followed that knock with a run-scoring single of his own to put the Spirit on top, 2-1.
The Spirit lead proved short-lived, however, as the Capitales scored three times in the top of the fifth to reclaim the lead. Lepine got things started with a single and scored the first run of the inning on a double from Legare. Willie James scored Legare with a sac fly to shallow center and Quebec got one last run on an RBI single from Lantigua to take the 4-2 lead.
Quebec tacked on two more in top of the seventh, extending their lead to four. After Lantigua drew a walk and Ed Montague singled, Lepine looped a single to left that Andrew Wishy muffed allowing both runners to cross the plate.
Unfortunately for the Spirit, the Capitales scoring spree continued into the eighth as Quebec plated three more runs. Scalabrini pushed the first run across the plate with an RBI single, and Quebec score two more on a wild pitch.
North Shore staged a rally in the bottom of the ninth inning starting with back-to-back doubles from pinch-hitter Jon de Vries and Wishy. Antoin Gray followed with a line-drive single to right and Sabino scored Wishy with a double to the left field corner to pull the Spirit to within five. B.J. Weed scored Gray with a ground ball out to make the score, 9-5 but that was as close as the Spirit would get.
Matt Bishop suffered the loss for the Spirit, his first of the season as a Spirit starter. Quebec reliever T.J. Stanton picked up the victory.
The series shifts to Quebec tomorrow night for Game 3. Sam Smith gets the start for the Spirit, while Quebec sends their ace, Gabe Ribas, to the hill. Spirit fans can follow the remainder of the best-of-five series on 1510 the Zone, the flagship radio station of North Shore Spirit baseball.
