New Haven County Cutters News Release

WEST HAVEN, CT - Starter RHP John Kelly (1-0) held the New Haven County Cutters (1-1) to one run on four hits, none coming after the fifth inning, in a dominating complete-game performance to lead the Brockton Rox to a 2-1 victory, Thursday night at Historic Yale Field, that evens the first round best-of-five playoff series, 1-1.

The Rox broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single from shortstop Mike Scanzano.

Cutters' reliever RHP Mark Comolli (0-1) hit the leadoff batter and then surrendered a hit-and-run single to left fielder Eugene Julien before Scanzano followed with the game-winning hit.

Cutters' starter RHP Justin Knoff was even better than his counterpart through 6.0 innings, allowing no runs and two hits while recording six strikeouts before an injury forced him to leave the game.

RHP Jarrett Stawarz replaced Knoff in the seventh inning with a 1-0 lead and was promptly tagged for a long home run by first baseman Francisco Lebron (1), tying the game 1-1.

The Cutters took a 1-0 advantage in the second inning when right fielder Orlando Encarnacion connected for a towering home run (1) that just hooked fair around the left field foul pole.

The Cutters used four relief pitchers after Knoff left the game prematurely, including LHP Cory Willey who retired his first three batters to extinguish the Rox' eighth inning rally and then tossed a hitless ninth.

The series now moves to Brockton, MA, with Game 3 scheduled for Friday at 7:05 p.m.

The Cutters will send RHP Courtney Hall (5-4, 3.61 ERA) to the mound with the Rox going with LHP Rolando Viera (9-7, 2.65 ERA).
