Erie SeaWolves News Release

It took the SeaWolves nine innings to score a run and 13 innings to take a lead, but the Howlers ended a four-game losing streak with a 2-1 win in 13 innings over the Altoona Curve on Sunday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark.

The Curve broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth against Erie starter Mark Sorensen. Eric Fryer led off with a single and was doubled home by Miles Durham for a 1-0 Curve lead.

The lead held until the top of the ninth inning. With one out, Jamie Johnson laid down a bunt off of reliever Tim Alderson. Johnson beat out the throw for a bunt single and on an error, advanced to second. Brandon Douglas followed with an RBI double, scoring Johnson, tying the game.

The game remained tied until the top of the 13th. Justin Henry led off and sent a bullet down the right field line, the ball rattled around in the corner allowing Henry to head towards third base. On the relay throw in, an errant throw from Miles Durham allowed the ball to reach the season and Henry to score, giving the ‘Wolves their first lead of the game at 2-1. The hit was Henry's third of the game and it was his second triple.

In the bottom of the 13th, pinch hitter Jose Hernandez led off with a double off of reliever Austin Wood and moved to third on a Brock Holt sacrifice bunt. The ‘Wolves then turned to Chance Ruffin. Ruffin, who took the loss on Saturday night came out firing on Sunday. He retired Starling Marte for the second out when Rawley Bishop made an amazing play on an over the shoulder catch in shallow right. After hitting Quincy Latimore to put the go-ahead run on, Ruffin worked to Jordy Mercer. On Saturday, Mercer hit a two-run blast off of Ruffin. Mercer worked a full count before Ruffin dropped in a breaking pitch for a called strikeout, ending the game.

Waite (1-1) picked up the win for the ‘Wolves tossing a scoreless 12th.

Sorensen picked up the no-decision despite his best outing of the season. The Erie righty allowed a run on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts in working a season-high eight innings.

The SeaWolves improved to 16-19 on the season while their record in extra innings games is now 2-1. The win also snapped a four-game losing streak to Altoona.

The SeaWolves are off on Monday and begin a three-game series with the Trenton Thunder (New York Yankees) on Tuesday night...6:35 First Pitch.
