Trenton Thunder News Release
Trenton, NJ - The Trenton Thunder (20-17) scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to come from behind to beat the Binghamton Mets (13-21) 3-2 Sunday in front of 5,543 fans at Waterfront Park. With two outs and Thunder runners on first and third in the final frame, Austin Krum lined a triple to right field, scoring two and providing the Thunder a walk-off win. Taking three games of four from Binghamton, the Thunder have now won five straight series.
For the first eight innings of the game, the Thunder bats were stymied by Binghamton pitchers Jeurys Familia, Roy Merritt and Ricky Brooks. Through eight innings, the three Mets' hurlers combined to limit the Thunder to no runs on just three hits.
Things would change in the bottom of the ninth inning, though, as the Thunder bats finally woke up. Jose Gil and Melky Mesa both doubled to lead-off the frame, cutting the Mets' lead to 2-1. After Jose Pirela sacrificed Mesa to third and Ray Kruml grounded out, Addison Maruszak walked to put runners on first and third. Then, Austin Krum lined the first pitch he saw from Mets' closer Erik Turgeon off the top of the wall in right field, scoring both runners and giving the Thunder the 3-2 victory.
After an off day Monday, the Thunder will open a three-game set with the Erie SeaWolves (Detroit Tigers) Tuesday at 6:35 PM. Trenton will send Yankees' top left-handed pitching prospect Manny Banuelos (1-0, 2.77) to the mound at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, Pennsylvania. Banuelos will oppose Erie's LHP Casey Crosby (1-2, 4.55). Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com. The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Hank Fuerst begins at 6:20 PM.
