SeaWolves Hold on in 4-3 Win in Akron

The SeaWolves (21-34) survived a late scare in the ninth to edge the Akron RubberDucks (32-25) 4-3 at Canal Park Sunday.

Erie scored three runs in the third inning on five hits off of Akron starter Zach Plesac. Sergio Alcantara drove a single into right to score Danny Woodrow to start, followed by and RBI groundout from Will Maddox to bring in Troy Montgomery. Dominic Ficociello earned his 29th RBI of the season with a single, and the SeaWolves led 3-0 going into the bottom of the third.

Kade Scivicque's RBI double smashed into right gave Ficociello a chance to score, making it 4-0 Erie in the fifth.

Akron brought a run home after throwing error by Trent Szkutnik to make it 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth.

The RubberDucks threatened once again in the ninth. Akron loaded the bases with two outs on Mark Ecker.Erie brought John Schreiber to the mound, who let up a two-run single for Connor Marabell. The righty held on though, forcing Willi Castro to ground out to end the game at 4-3.

Szkutnik (1-1) picked up the win for the SeaWolves. Anthony Castro threw for four innings in his AA debut, surrendered one hit, and walked seven. Plesac (2-1) suffered his first AA loss, and Schreiber picked up his 6th save on the season.

The SeaWolves return home on Tuesday to start a three-game series with the Hartford Yard Goats. Spencer Turnbull (2-5, 4.83 ERA) is set to start for Erie at 7:05 PM.

Two Buck Tuesday returns to UPMC Park. Fans 21 and older can enjoy $2 drink specials in the Bud Light Beer Garden through the sixth inning.

The first 250 kids, ages 12 and under, receive a voucher for a free Smith's hot dog, Utz chips and Pepsi fountain drink presented by 94.7 BOB FM.
