
Seattle Storm Select Katie Gearlds in 2007 WNBA Draft

SEATTLE, Wednesday, April 4, 2007 - The Seattle Storm today selected 6-1 guard/forward Katie Gearlds from Purdue University in the first round (7th pick overall) of the 2007 WNBA Draft held at in Cleveland, Ohio.
"Katie Gearlds is a perfect fit," Storm Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Anne Donovan said. "If there was one player we could have written into the Storm roster for best fit, it's Katie Gearlds. She is the best shooter we saw in the college game this year."
Gearlds averaged 18.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game this season for the Boilermakers while shooting 37.4 percent from behind the three-point line and 43.2 percent from the field. The Beech Grove, Indiana native was named the Coaches Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2004 and All-Big Ten First Team in 2006 and 2007. In her four-year career at Purdue, Gearlds averaged 14.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 126 career games while shooting 43.2 percent from the field.
"I think Seattle is the perfect fit for me," Gearlds said. "That's where I hoped and thought I'd end up and I feel like I have a great opportunity to play for a great coach and to learn from Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson and others on the team. I look forward to the challenge."
In the WNBA Draft's third round, Seattle selected 5-9 guard Brandie Hoskins from Ohio State University with the 33rd overall pick. Hoskins averaged 14.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game during her senior season and shot 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. Hoskins appeared in 120 career games for the Buckeyes, averaging 12.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game.
The 2007 Storm season will open against the Houston Comets on Saturday, May 19, at 7 p.m. The following Wednesday, May 23, Seattle will host the Phoenix Mercury at 7 p.m. at KeyArena. The defending WNBA Champion Detroit Shock will visit KeyArena on Wednesday, June 20.
