Sacramento Monarchs News Release
SACRAMENTO, CALIF., April 4, 2007 - The Sacramento Monarchs announced today that they have selected Jessica Dickson from the University of Southern Florida with the 21st overall pick in the second round of the 2007 WNBA Draft, held today at the Renaissance Hotel in Cleveland's Public Square.
A 5'11" forward from Ocala, Florida, the Associated Press named Dickson a 2006 All-America Honorable Mention. Dickson is also a two-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection and was the BIG EAST Player of the Year as a junior. She ends her collegiate career with the Bulls as the schools all-time leading scorer (male or female) with 2,402 points. She also finished sixth all-time in rebounds (746) and is the all-time leader in games played, appearing in all 125 games during her four seasons.
Sacramento also selected Meg Bulger from West Virginia with the 36th overall pick in the third round of the 2007 WNBA Draft. A 6'0" forward from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Bulger was named an Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention and All-BIG EAST Second Team in 2006. She tore her ACL in 2006, missing the final 13 games of the 2005-06 season. She also missed the entire 2006-07 season due to re-injuring her surgically repaired left knee.
"Jessica was the best overall player available at the 21st pick in the draft," said Monarchs General Manager John Whisenant. "Bulger is a great three-point shooter with a 43% career shooting percentage. We look forward to seeing how they may fit into the Monarchs system."
The 2006 WNBA Western Conference Champion Sacramento Monarchs will host the Los Angeles Sparks in their Home Opener on Saturday, June 2, at 7 p.m., at ARCO Arena, in a rematch of the 2006 WNBA Western Conference Finals to be locally televised on News10. Sacramento begins the season with their first four games on the road, including the WNBA season opener, in a nationally televised game (ABC), against the 2006 WNBA Champion Detroit Shock on Saturday, May 19, at 12:30 p.m. PDT.
