San Antonio Stars News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Silver Stars traded Jessica Davenport, their second overall selection in the 2007 WNBA Draft, to New York for Becky Hammon, pending a physical.
Terms of the deal also give San Antonio New York's second round 2008 selection, while New York will claim the lower selection between San Antonio and Detroit's 2008 first-round picks.
"We like the college draft and obviously the opportunity to obtain Becky Hammon was an offer we couldn't turn down," said General Manager/Head Coach Dan Hughes. "Becky just complements what we had put in place so well. We feel her presence on the court is just a perfect blend to some of the other pieces of the Silver Stars and we were just very excited to have Becky as a part of us."
A two-time all-star, Hammon played the last eight seasons with the New York Liberty, earning second-team all-WNBA honors in 2006. She has amassed more than 2,000 career points, averaging 10.4 points, 2.5 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game.
Last season was among Hammon's best, as the guard averaged 14.7 points per game for the Liberty.
San Antonio scored a second-round steal with North Carolina's Camille Little at 17th overall. The 6-foot-2-inch forward averaged 14.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game as a senior, earning AP All-American honorable mention.
"As excited as I am to have Becky join us, I'm equally excited that we had the opportunity to draft Camille Little," said Hughes. "Camille to us was a first-round pick in every way possible, and for us to realize her at 17 is really a gift. Her defensive play, her intelligent approach to the game and her offensive versatility just really make her a welcome addition."
With their final selection on the day, San Antonio picked up 6-ft-6-inch Nare Diawara from Virginia Tech. Diawara, a native of Bamako, Mali, averaged 12.1 points and 8.1 rebounds as a senior.
"Nare gives us the length in the post that we were seeking," said Hughes. "She's a shot-blocker, a rebounder, runs the floor well and will complement our front line."
San Antonio opens training camp April 22. The WNBA tips off the 2007 season May 19 with the Silver Stars traveling to Phoenix. San Antonio's home opener is May 23 against Connecticut.
