Victoria Seals News Release

St. George, UT - In search of their first win in the month of August, the Victoria Seals squared off against the St. George RoadRunners in game two on Tuesday night. With the RoadRunners turning to Luis Gonzales (5-5) for the start, the Seals handed the ball to Aaron Trolia (0-0) at Bruce Hurst Field.

Grounding into double-plays to finish both the first and second innings, Victoria opened the scoring in the top of the third frame when Sergio Pedroza followed up a Wilver Perez double with an RBI base hit for a 1-0 lead. An immediate response came from the RoadRunners in the bottom of the third, when a lead-off walk to Chase Leavitt advanced to third on a single from Gary Harris, and both scored thanks to a double from Yosvany Almario to put the home side up by one.

After a scoreless fourth frame, St. George would again put the game out of reach for Victoria with a mammoth bottom of the fifth inning. Receiving a double from Harris to kick off the inning, the RoadRunners loaded the bases on a walk to A.J. Valentine and a two-out hit by pitch from Cody Nowlin. Then, after Henry Calderon picked up an RBI walk, Ryan Stevenson cleared the bases with a double down the third base line for a 6-1 lead.

Still with two outs in the frame, Eric Pringle stretched the St. George advantage to six runs with a single, and a base hit from Leavitt set up Harris' second double of the inning for a 9-1 score. Then, after Almario chased Trolia from the game with another single, Valentine capped of a string of six consecutive two-out hits with a two-run blast off of Victoria reliever Phil Sobcow to lift the RoadRunners to a commanding 12-1 lead.

With the Seals earning one run back thanks to an RBI single Bret LeVier in the top of the sixth, St. George added to their lead in the bottom half of the frame, cashing Nowlin and Stevenson after their base hit and walk, respectively to remain on top, 14-2. Victoria then staged their biggest attack of the night in the top of the seventh when back-to-back singles from Billy Krause and Perez set up a two-run base knock from Brian Rios, who later scored courtesy of a double from Terry Mermer en route to a four-run Victoria frame.

Capping off their offense in the seventh, the RoadRunners made it 15-6 with another double, their sixth of the game, from Jose Rodriguez. Adding three more runs in the top of the eighth, Victoria pulled back with six of the home side when Gabriel Riley led off the frame with a double, both Krause and Pedroza were hit by pitches from reliever Angel Sanchez, and Rios plated the final run with an RBI single.

Returning for the ninth after closing out the eighth, RoadRunners pitcher Vic Darensbourg then locked down the Seals in order in the top of the ninth to hand Victoria their fourth straight loss overall, and second straight by a 15-9 final score.

Starter Luis Gonzales improves to 6-5 on the year for St. George with the win, while Aaron Trolia takes his first loss in just his second start this season. Lead-off man Gary Harris had an excellent night for the RoadRunners, finishing 4-for-6 with 3 RBI's while Yosvany Almario and Ryan Stevenson also batted in three each. Brian Rios went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI's in the losing effort for the Seals.
