Victoria Seals News Release

St. George, UT - Trying to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the St. George RoadRunners, the Victoria Seals returned to Bruce Hurst Field on Wednesday night. With the home sending Justin Abbott (0-3) to the hill, the Seals countered with right-hander James Garcia (2-1) in the series finale.

Flying out of the gate in the top of the first inning, the Seals opened the scoring when a lead-off walk to Wilver Perez and a base hit from Sergio Pedroza set up an RBI double from Josh Arhart put Victoria 1-0. The Seals then stretched their lead to 3-0 when Brian Rios made it three straight hits with an RBI single, and Brett Flowers knocked in another with a sacrifice fly. After another base hit from Matt Kavanaugh put runners on the corners, Terry Mermer made it 4-0 Victoria with a single into left field, and Gabriel Riley capped off a big inning for the Seals with an RBI double for a five run lead.

Earning one back in the bottom half of the frame, the RoadRunners cut the Victoria lead to 5-1 with a lead-off double from Gary Harris who scored on the same play thanks to a throwing error from Victoria second basemen Wilver Perez. Following a scoreless second frame, St. George cut the Seals' lead to three runs on an RBI double courtesy of catcher Jose Rodriguez.

Providing some insurance in the top of the fifth, Victoria jumped back onto the scoreboard with back-to-back singles from Riley and Bret LeVier, along with a walk to Perez to load the bases. Then, with a single from Pedroza putting Victoria into a 6-2 lead, an error to RoadRunners third basemen Henry Calderon lifted the Seals to a five-run advantage once again. Before the frame was out, Brian Rios collected his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly for an 8-2 Victoria lead.

After the RoadRunners grabbed another run back with a one-run double from A.J. Valentine in the bottom of the fourth, the Seals provided a response of their own. Loading the bases with a pair of hits from Riley and LeVier once again, to go with another walk from Perez, Pedroza was hit by a pitch from St. George reliever Eude Brito to put the visitors up 9-3.

Pulling back within four runs of the Seals in the bottom half of the sixth, the RoadRunners used a single from Calderon along with a double off the bat Stevenson to hand Eric Pringle a sacrifice fly. Still with just one out in the inning, Chase Leavitt added another on a double to move the score to 9-5 through six frames.

With Sergio Pedroza adding an RBI single in the top of the eighth, Victoria got a strong effort from newly-signed right handed pitcher Anthony Pluta, before handing the ball to closer Dane De La Rosa who allowed one run in the ninth, before closing the door on the RoadRunners to seal a 10-6 Victoria win.

Seals' starter James Garcia picked up his third win on the season in helping Victoria avoid their fifth straight loss, while Justin Abbot falls to 0-4 for St. George with the loss. Sergio Pedroza stayed red hot for Victoria with a 3-for-5 outing to go with 3 RBI's, while both Gabriel Riley and Bret LeVier posted their first three-hit nights of the year.
