Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Quad Cities River Bandits lost for the 10th time in their last 12 games on Saturday, dropping a 10-3 decision to the Clinton LumberKings at Alliant Energy Field.
Quad Cities (25-35, 55-75) issued seven walks and stranded nine runners in falling 20 games below the .500 mark for the first time this season. While the River Bandits sit five games back with nine to play in the race for the Western Division Wild Card, Clinton (26-32, 66-62) used the win to pull within three games of the front-running Burlington Bees.
After Rich Racobaldo saved a run with a charging, bare-handed play to end the bottom of the first, the River Bandits capitalized in the top of the second with the game's first run. Ryde Rodriguez doubled to open the inning and advanced to third on a base hit by Domnit Bolivar. One out later, Jason Stidham grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Rodriguez to cross the plate for a 1-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth, the LumberKings mounted a four-run rally to take control. It started with consecutive one-out singles by Ian Bladergroen and Nate Tenbrink before Travis Howell tied the score with two-out single to center. A walk to Shaver Hansen loaded the bases, setting the stage for Kyle Seager to deliver the big blow. Seager drove a line-drive single to right that scored both Tenbrink and Howell, and when the throw to the plate got away Hansen was also able to race home as Clinton seized a 4-1 lead.
The River Bandits pulled to within 4-3 with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Stidham started both rallies with base hits, crossing the plate on Rich Racobaldo sacrifice fly in the fifth, and then again on a hard-hit ball by Racobaldo in the seventh that was misplayed by second baseman Luis Nunez into a two-out error.
In the bottom of the seventh, however, one big swing by the LumberKings' Scott Savastano put the momentum back in the home team's corner. With two away and a man at first, Savastano took a 1-2 pitch from Joel Pichardo and cranked a two-run bomb to left as Clinton increased their lead to 6-3.
Bobby LaFromboise (8-8) earned the win with five innings of two-run ball and six strikeouts for Clinton. Scott McGregor (6-11) suffered the loss, grinding through 6.1 innings but allowing five runs - four earned - on six hits.
The advantage was padded with four more runs in the eighth. Quad Cities closer Dave Carpenter struggled with his control in a non-save situation, walking four of the five batters he faced before being removed. All four runs eventually came around to score as Clinton took a comfortable 10-3 cushion into the ninth.
Seager paced the LumberKings' offense, going 3-for-5 with four RBI for the home team.
