South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - In conjunction with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the South Bend Silver Hawks have announced that fifth round pick Ryan Wheeler has joined the active roster from short-season A Yakima. To make room for Wheeler, INF Nelson Gomez has been promoted to high-A Visalia.

Wheeler, selected from Loyola Marymount University in the fifth round this June, will leave a last place team and is thrust into the middle of a playoff chase. At the time of his promotion, Wheeler was hitting .363 with five home runs and 36 RBIs in 64 games for the Yakima Bears. He led the Northwest League in hits, on-base percentage, and extra base hits, while also ranking second in batting average. On Thursday, Wheeler was selected as a Northwest League All-Star.

Gomez was a 28th round pick in 2008, and enjoyed success with Missoula last season, leading the club in both home runs and RBIs. His numbers have dipped this season with the Silver Hawks, as he is hitting just .218 with two home runs and 31 RBIs in 95 games for South Bend. However, his experience should help Visalia as they close out their regular season and try for a playoff spot in the California League.

The South Bend roster currently stands at 25 active players, plus one on the disabled list. The Midwest League limit is 25 active players.
