DAYTON, OH - Alex Oliveras went 4-for-5 to lead an 18-hit attack, helping the Dayton Dragons (27-34; 55-76) topped the Lansing Lugnuts (25-36; 51-79), 10-6, on Saturday night at Fifth Third Field.
Oliveras doubled in each of the first two innings and later added a pair of singles for the Dragons, who pulled within two games of South Bend for the Eastern Division's final playoff spot.
The Great Lakes Loons had clinched a playoff spot earlier in the evening with a 6-0 shutout of South Bend. It is the first postseason berth in the three-year history for the Loons.
Dayton starter J.C. Sulbaran (4-5) earned the victory, striking out eight over 5 1/3 innings while allowing four runs on seven hits, including home runs by Mike McDade and Welinton Ramirez.
Chris Holguin (1-4) shouldered the loss, touched up for eight runs on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings. It was the first appearance by Holguin in a game since August 21..
Kevyn Feiner and Cody Puckett each homered in the winning effort for Dayton, which received multi-hit efforts from six players in its starting nine.
Lansing shortstop Ryan Goins was ejected from the game in the bottom of fifth inning by bases umpire Nick Mahrley after Humberto Sosa was ruled to have advanced to second base safely on a wild pitch.
The teams play the third contest in their four-game series on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Lansing right-hander Chad Beck (6-7, 5.63) gets the start opposite Dragons left-hander Ezequiel Infante (1-1, 5.20).
