Déjà vu? Loons Shut Out Hawks Again
August 29, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - For the second night in a row, the Great Lakes Loons tossed a three hit shutout over the South Bend Silver Hawks. The final on Saturday night was 6-0, and it clinched the first ever playoff spot for the Great Lakes Loons in their third season in existence.
South Bend is still leading the race for the wild card spot, with eight games remaining in the second half.
Great Lakes scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the first inning against South Bend starter Randy Rodriguez (LP, 5-10). With two outs, Anthony Hatch doubled to centerfield and scored on a single by Kyle Russell for the 1-0 lead. For Russell, it was his Midwest League leading 95th RBI of the season.
The Loons went back to the well for four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rodriguez started the inning by walking Dee Gordon, who then stole second and scored on a single by Jaime Pedroza for a 2-0 advantage. That ended the night of Rodriguez, who would eventually be charged with three runs in his 5.0 innings on the mound.
Bayron Zepeda (ND) took over, allowing a single and hitting a batter to load the bases with nobody out. It looked like he might get out of the inning with two strikeouts in a row, but a wild pitch brought home a run to make it 3-0. Joe Becker followed with a two run single, to put the lead at 5-0.
The Loons added the final tally in the bottom of the eighth against Jordan Meaker (ND). Nick Buss had a RBI double, scoring Russell to put the score at 6-0. The run allowed by Meaker ended his consecutive scoreless innings streak at 11.0, a season high for the right hander.
All the while, South Bend had trouble just getting a hit. Nathan Eovaldi (ND) started for Great Lakes, allowing two walks but no hits over 3.0 innings. He was replaced by Ethan Martin (WP, 6-8) in a tandem system, and Martin allowed just one hit over the next three innings. Steve Smith (SV, 3) pitched the final three innings, allowing two hits but completing the shutout.
The four game series continues with game three Sunday afternoon with a 3:05 PM Eastern Time first pitch at Dow Diamond. RHP Eric Smith (0-0, 1.50 ERA) will make his second start for South Bend against Great Lakes RHP Josh Walter (10-4, 3.55 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 2:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
