Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - Kyle McAllister, Ryan Menei, and Mark Rooneem each had a goal, but the Charlotte Checkers were able to hold on for a 5-3 win after jumping out to a 4-0 lead, defeating the Mississippi Sea Wolves at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina on Friday evening.
Rookei Matt Schepke took a feed from Ryan Murphy and shoveled it into the net to give Charlotte a 1-0 lead at 9:13 of the first period. At 11:24 of the first period, Steve Ward blasted the rebound of Schepke's shot past Sea Wolves goaltender Ryan Munce for a 2-0 Checkers lead. The Checkers made it 3-0 when Michel Leveille fired the puck over Munce's glove hand on a five-on-three power play at 16:08.
Schepke potted his second goal of the game at 14:03 of the second period, driving to the net and hammering home the rebound of a shot by Ryan Murphy and extending the Checkers lead to 4-0.
Kyle McAllister got the Sea Wolves on the board, popping in the airborne rebound of a shot by Evan Kotsopoulos at 16:18. Less than two minutes later, Mark Rooneem made an end-to-end rush, shredding the Checkers defense with magnificent stickhandling and firing a wrist shot past Charlotte goalie Jeff Jakaitis at 18:13.
Charlotte restored its' four-goal lead when Marty Guerin potted his fourth marker of the season at 12:58 of the third.
Ryan Menei later broke down the ice one-on-two, split the Checkers defensemen and tucked the puck under Jakaitis' right arm for his 12th goal of the season, but it was too little, too late, as the Checkers held on for the 5-3 victory.
Ryan Munce made 41 saves, earning a loss, and the Sea Wolves were 0-for-5 on the power play.
