Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN, NB --- The league-leading Saint John Sea Dogs completed a sweep of their eight-game season series with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Wednesday night, defeating northern New Brunswick's major junior squad by a score of 5-1 in front of 3,308 fans at Harbour Station.
Saint John dominated the special teams battle in their mid-week summit versus Acadie-Bathurst, capitalizing on three of their five power play opportunities while going 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.
Tomas Jurco, Michael Kirkpatrick, Nick Petersen, Mike Hoffman, and Stanislav Galiev all scored for the Sea Dogs in the lopsided home win, while David Gilbert tallied the lone marker of the evening for the Titan. Meanwhile, between the pipes, Marco Cousineau (24 saves) outdueled François Lacerte (35 saves) to pick up the 19th win of his overage campaign.
The visitors scored the lone goal of the opening stanza in the 17th minute of play when David Gilbert buried a feed from Jonathan Lessard to improve his 2009-10 goals total to 15.
Saint John tied things up at the 14:00 mark of period number two, with import winger Stanislav Galiev blasting a long-range slap shot past Lacerte to pick up the 14th goal of his rookie season. The hosts pulled ahead 3:47 later when superstar sniper Mike Hoffman wired home his 35th of the year from the top of the slot. Galiev and Tomas Jurco both picked up assists on Hoffman's power play tally.
Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Nick Petersen then doubled the Sea Dogs' lead late in the middle frame, knocking a juicy rebound past a sprawling Lacerte to send Wednesday's contest into the second intermission with the home team ahead on the scoreboard 3-1.
Saint John went up 4-1 at the 8:14 mark of the third period when a crease-hovering Michael Kirkpatrick converted on a nifty cross-ice setup from towering blue-liner Simon Després, registering the 24th goal of his season in the process. Tomas Jurco got in on the action eight minutes later, pouncing on a loose puck deep in Acadie-Bathurst territory and firing a hard shot to the back of the Titan net. Jurco's 20th goal of the season proved to be the final offensive strike of the match; the Sea Dogs cruised to from there on in, taking the decision by a 5-1 final.
Up next for Saint John is a Friday night showdown with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at Harbour Station. The puck drops at 7:30pm as the Sea Dogs look to record their seventh straight win and move one step closer to earning the first division title in franchise history.
