Sea Dogs Snap Curve Win Streak with 13-2 Win

August 14, 2012 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release

PORTLAND, Maine - Altoona's road struggles continued in Portland on Tuesday night in the first game of a nine-game road trip with Portland scoring six runs in the first three innings in an eventual, 13-2, win. Adalberto Santos and Matt Curry each had two hits in the loss, which halts the Curve's win streak at five.

The Sea Dogs scored the first of their 13 runs in the first when Marquez Smith scampered home on a Tyler Waldron (1-1) wild pitch with two away. It didn't get any easier for Waldron in the second when Portland led off the inning with four straight hits. The fourth hit, a double off the bat of Christian Vazquez, drove in a pair that placed the Sea Dogs up, 3-0.

Waldron walked Ryan Dent before a run-scoring fielder's choice off the bat of Jackie Bradley Jr. made it 4-0. One final run crossed the plate before the inning was said and done. Waldron did not finish the frame and turned the ball over to Nathan Baker for the inning's final two outs.

Portland went on to grab another run in the third and five more in the fifth to open up an 11-0 lead. On the flip side of the diamond, the Curve bats were stymied by Sea Dogs' starter Brandon Workman (1-0), who was making his Double-A debut on Tuesday night. Workman retired the first 12 Curve batters he faced before giving up his first Double-A hit to Curry in the fifth.

Workman finished six scoreless innings and gave up just the two hits while striking out six Curve batters. Altoona scored its first runs of the game in the seventh off reliever Ryan Pressly with RBIs from Curry and Christian Marrero.

Oscar Tejeda was 1-for-4 in his return to Portland and extended his hitting streak to seven games in the loss.

Looking to shake off the tough loss, the Curve (59-62) will take on the Sea Dogs (56-65) at 7 p.m. Wednesday night from Hadlock Field in Portland. Former Sea Dog and now Curve lefty Kris Johnson (1-1, 2.84) gets the starting nod in the second game for Altoona while LHP Drake Britton (3-5, 4.02) makes the start for Portland.

Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. For tickets and more information on the final Curve homestand of 2012 that begins Thursday, August 23rd, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the box office windows at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
