Howard, Strikeouts Punch out B-Mets 5-2
August 14, 2012 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Ryan Schimpf broke a scoreless tie in the fourth and Kevin Howard added a two-run homer in the fifth to lead the Fisher Cats (49-73) to a 5-2 win to start a three-game series with the Binghamton Mets (59-63). The victory is the Fisher Cats fifth in their last seven games as they improve their record to 6-6 in the month of August.
In a scoreless game, Schimpf bounced a single to right field with two outs in the fourth to give the Fisher Cats a 1-0 lead against Gonzalez Germen. The hit was the first in the Fisher Cats first seven attempts with runners in scoring position.
An inning later, Howard stepped up with another clutch hit, drilling a two-run homer just over the right-center field wall. Howard's sixth of the year came with two outs and pushed the Fisher Cats lead to 3-0.
Rehabbing Blue Jays starter Brandon Morrow failed to qualify for the victory, despite the lead. He pitched only 4.2 innings, but allowed just three hits with 6 strikeouts in his second rehab outing with the Fisher Cats.
Michael Dubee allowed a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the sixth before the Fisher Cats put the game away in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded, Brian Jeroloman's weak grounder resulted in a wild throw by Germen, allowing two unearned runs to score to bump the lead back to three runs at 5-2.
Marcus Stroman (2-0) picked up his second win in four Fisher Cats outings, throwing a scoreless seventh with one strikeout. With four strikeouts from Dubee, a pair from Chorye Spoone, and solo K's from Stroman and Sam Dyson (Save, 6), the Fisher Cats recorded a season-high 14 strikeouts in the win.
Schimpf and Howard each finished the game 2-4, as did Brian Van Kirk and Jake Marisnick. Marisnick now has three extra base hits (two doubles, 1 triple) in his last two games going back to Sunday.
The series continues on Wednesday night with a Fisher Cats team poster giveaway for the first 2,500 fans courtesy of Spectrum Marketing Companies. Fans can also win prizes by playing free USA Subs Baseball Bingo. First pitch is at 7:05 PM. For tickets and a complete list of the upcoming promotions, visit www.nhfishercats.com.
