NEW BRITAIN, CT - New Britain's Logan Darnell struck out eight and Deibinson Romero powered the offense as the Rock Cats downed Richmond, 5-1 on Tuesday night.

Romero - who led the Rock Cats' offense with three RBI - was joined by Chris Herrmann and Nate Hanson with multi-hit games. All three batters had two hits apiece.

"(Romero) continues to get big hits all season," said Rock Cats manager Jeff Smith. "He had two, two-out hits and three RBI - that was the difference in the game."

The Rock Cats struck for two runs against Richmond's Michael Kickham in the third inning. Herrmann and Oswaldo Arcia delivered back-to-back doubles with one out. Herrmann crossed the plate on Arcia's hit for the 1-0 lead. Romero added an RBI single that scored Arcia later in the inning.

Romero slugged a two-run home run in the fifth inning that scored Arcia, who had reached base on a walk.

Darnell (9-10) blanked the Flying Squirrels through the first six innings. He finished the night with just one run allowed on six hits.

"Darnell really set the tone. That was one of his better outings of the season tonight," said Smith.

In the seventh, Richmond's Russell Mitchell scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Cavan to put the Flying Squirrels on the board.

Kickham (10-9) struck out nine in 4 2/3 innings but allowed four runs on eight hits to suffer the loss.

"He was extremely tough. We battled," said Smith. "The big thing was we drove up his pitch count."

Bruce Pugh struck out four in two shutout innings out of the Rock Cats' bullpen.

The Rock Cats (66-56) remain tied for second place in the Eastern Division. Both teams are four games behind first-place Trenton.

ALLSTATE PLAYER OF THE GAME : LHP Logan Darnell limited Richmond to one run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out eight - which tied his season high - and walked two.
