
Sea Dogs Nip Fisher Cats 6-5

Portland, Maine - Brian Van Belle struck out a career-high 10 batters, while Tyler Dearden knocked in three runs and David Hamilton had four hits, boosting the Portland Sea Dogs (32-39) to a 6-5 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (31-40) on Wednesday at Hadlock Field.
The Sea Dogs broke out for three runs in the bottom of the second against Fisher Cats starter Adam Kloffenstein. David Hamilton and Kole Cottam started the inning with singles and both advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Tyler Dearden hit a line drive base hit into center, scoring Hamilton to take the lead 1-0. Nick Sogard grounded out in the next at-bat, bringing in Cottam, increasing the lead to 2-0. One out later, Ceddanne Rafaela singled home Dearden, capping off a three-run inning.
Portland added another run in the bottom of the third inning with Kloffenstein still pitching. With two outs, Hamilton singled to left and stole second base, putting himself in scoring position. Cottam filled the empty bag with a walk and Dearden took a base knock to right, scoring Hamilton and expanding Portland's lead to 4-0.
Three runs came around for New Hampshire in the top of the sixth with Portland pitcher Brian Van Belle on the mound. Rafael Lantigua led off with a double and Spencer Horwitz plated him with a double of his own. Orelvis Martinez cleared the bases with a two-run homer, bringing the score to 4-3.
Two insurance runs scored for the Sea Dogs in the bottom of the seventh inning with Fisher Cats reliever Marcus Reyes on the mound. Stephen Scott got the offense rolling with a one-out single, and David Hamilton drove him in with a double to center, making it a 5-3 lead. After a pitching change that brought Parker Caracci into the game for New Hampshire, Dearden collected his third RBI with a base hit to left, bringing in Hamilton to make it 6-3.
The Fisher Cats brought in two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Horwitz was hit by a pitch and Trevor Schwecke took a base hit into left field. Luis De Los Santos hit a hard grounder to second, where Hamilton made a fielding error, scoring Horwitz and cutting into the lead 6-4. Zac Cook lifted a sacrifice fly to center, plating Schwecke to make it a 6-5 game. Chase Shugart tossed a scoreless top of the ninth, locking down a 6-5 victory for the Sea Dogs.
Van Belle (2-1, 5.40 ERA) tossed 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, walking one, and striking out a career-high 10 batters in his second win of the year. Kloffenstein (0-2, 5.87 ERA) pitched 5.0 innings, surrendering four runs on 10 hits, walking two, and striking out three in his second loss of the season.
The Sea Dogs and Fisher Cats play the third game of a six-game series on Thursday with a 6:00 PM pitch at Hadlock Field. Portland sends LHP Chris Sale (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound against New Hampshire's pitcher to be announced.
