Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN, December 18, 2006 - The Saint John Sea Dogs have pulled the trigger on two transactions on this the first day of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) trading period. QMJHL teams are able to trade players until Jan. 8, 2007.
In the first transaction, the Sea Dogs dealt 20-year-old forward Charles Bergeron to the Acadie-Bathurst Titan for a fourth round draft pick in 2007. Saint John then traded that pick to the Lewiston MAINEiacs for 19-year-old goaltender Travis Fullerton. To make room for Fullerton, the Sea Dogs have released goaltender Aaron Barton.
The second transaction involves a total of four players, all forwards. The Sea Dogs have acquired 17-year-old Keven Guérette-Charland and 18-year-old Kyle Kelly from the Victoriaville Tigres in exchange for Alexandre Monahan and Alexandre Labonté. The Tigres also received a fifth round pick from the Sea Dogs for the 2007 QMJHL draft.
Sea Dogs interim general manager and head coach, Jacques Beaulieu, said the organization has had very good reports concerning Fullerton, who has been playing this season for the Moncton Beavers of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League. In 19 games with Moncton, Fullerton had a 2.44 goals against average and a .910 save percentage. The five-foot-eleven, 170 pound backstop, is a native of Riverview, NB.
"Travis is a cat-like goaltender," noted Beaulieu. "He's very competitive and very quick. He battles for every shot."
Guérette-Charland was selected by Victoriaville in the first round (seventh overall) of the 2005 QMJHL draft. The six-foot, 183 pound, left wing is a native of Victoriaville. He won gold for Team Quebec at the 2006 World U-17 Hockey Challenge in Regina, SK. Guérette-Charland had six goals and four assists in 31 games this year with the Tigres.
Keven is very skilled and he adds some size and skill to our lineup," said Beaulieu. "He has a lot of upside. NHL scouts are looking at him."
Kelly, also a left wing, was Victoriaville's fifth round pick (83rd overall) in the 2005 QMJHL draft. The six-foot-two, 200 pound native of Montreal, had one goal for the Tigres in 14 games this season.
Kyle's a big guy," said Beaulieu, "who skates ok and has a good shot. He brings size to the hockey club."
The Sea Dogs are currently on their Christmas break. They will return to play on Dec. 27 when they meet the Halifax Mooseheads at the Metro Centre. Their next home game is Dec. 30 when the Lewiston MAINEiacs will visit Harbour Station in a 7 p.m. contest.
