Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs returned from the All-Star Break with a 5-4 loss to the New Britain Rock Cats Thursday night at Hadlock Field before 7,100 fans.
Three Portland throwing errors on potential double play balls proved costly to the Sea Dogs Thursday evening.
The Rock Cats broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the eighth inning when Sea Dogs third baseman Ryan Khoury threw a potential double play ball, off the bat of Nathan Hanson, high to second base sending the ball into right field and sending Yangervis Solarte around to score the game winning run.
New Britain scored two runs without the benefit of a hit in the first inning. Miguel Gonzalez walked two, hit a batter, and was hurt by a throwing error by shortstop Heiker Meneses. Both runs scored when Solarte grounded to second base forcing out the runner at second but Meneses' attempt to throw out Solarte at first was off the mark allowing two runs to score.
The Rock Cats scratched across two more runs in the third on just one hit as once again the Sea Dogs were hurt by two walks and a Meneses' throwing error. Solarte provided the lone hit, a RBI double scoring Parmalee. Solarte collected three of the five New Britain hits on the evening.
Jeremy Hazlebaker blasted a two run shot, his fifth of the year in the fifth to cut the lead in half at 4-2. It was the fourth home run in the last three games for Hazelbaker.
Will Middlebrooks added a two run shot of his own in the sixth inning to tie the game at four apiece. It was the tenth home run of the season for Middlebrooks.
Sea Dogs' pitchers held the powerful New Britain offense to just five hits. Starter Miguel Gonzalez went four innings yielding four runs (two earned) on two hits. Gonzalez walked five and struck out five.
Junichi Tazawa (1-2) pitched well but suffered the tough luck loss surrendering the winning run in the eighth. Tazawa tossed 3.1 strong innings of relief allowing one run on three hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out four.
Andrew Albers (1-0) picked-up his first Double-A win for New Britain tossing two shutout innings in relief of Steve Hirschfeld.
Tyler Robertson earned his tenth save of the season tossing a scoreless ninth.
The two clubs will resume the series Friday night at Hadlock Field with a 7:00 PM start. The Sea Dogs will send right-handed pitcher Brock Huntzinger to the mound (5-7, 6.49). The Rock Cats will counter with righty Brett Jacobson (3-4, 4.18). The first 1,000 kids (16 and under) will receive a t-shirt courtesy of Dead River Corporation.
