Sea Dogs Fend off B-Mets in Opener, 6-4

PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Sea Dogs plated two runs in the third inning and matched the Binghamton Mets run-for-run over the final six frames in a 6-4 win on Monday night at Hadlock Field. TJ Rivera collected four hits and Brian Burgamy and Brandon Nimmo each launched home runs in the losing effort. The defeat bumped Binghamton to 4.5 games out of first place.

Portland cracked the scoreboard in a span of three pitches in the third against Gabriel Ynoa. Heiker Meneses started by ripping a single to left on the first pitch of the inning. After Ryan Dent was hit while attempting a bunt, Derrik Gibson pushed a bunt down the first base line. Burgamy fielded the roller, but his low throw to first skipped down the line, allowing Meneses to score from second. Major League rehabber Ryan Lavarnway doubled Portland's lead with an RBI groundout two batters later.

After getting blanked by Portland starter Wilfredo Boscan through four innings, Binghamton plated a run in the fifth. With Xorge Carrillo on first, Dilson Herrera lined a double to the right-field gap. Carrillo scored Binghamton's first run while Herrera was nabbed between second and third. The two-bagger extended the second baseman's hitting streak to nine games.

The Sea Dogs stretched their lead back out to two runs in the fifth. With runners at the corners and two outs, Sean Coyle sent a chopper back up the middle. Rivera reeled the bouncer in from short, but Blake Swihart beat his flip to second, allowing Gibson to score safely.

Nimmo erased the two-run deficit with one swing in the seventh. Following a leadoff single by Rivera, Nimmo blasted the first pitch he saw from reliever Mike McCarthy over the left-center field wall. His fifth home run as a B-Met tied the game at three.

Portland broke the tie against the B-Mets bullpen. After allowing the first two batters he faced to reach, Ryan Fraser ceded to Randy Fontanez. Coyle greeted the righty by sending a chopper off the plate. The ball bounced high enough to prompt Gibson to score from third giving Portland the lead for good. The Sea Dogs kicked their lead to two runs when Blake Swihart scampered home on a wild pitch.

Burgamy cut the deficit back to one with a solo blast off McCarthy in the eighth inning. Burgamy's 18th homer of the season, his third in two games, pushed him into a tie with Lawley for the team lead.

The Sea Dogs returned serve yet again in the bottom of the inning. Following a double by Dent and a walk by Swihart, defensive replacement Stefan Welch laced an RBI single into right.

Robby Scott took over in the ninth and erased Rivera's leadoff single by inducing Nimmo to bounce into a double play. The southpaw retired Travis Taijeron to lock down his second save of the season.

McCarthy (9-4) allowed three runs on three hits, including two home runs, over three innings of relief to pick up the win while also suffering his first blown save. Fraser (2-2) watched both runs on his tab score under Fontanez's watch and took the loss. Ynoa allowed three runs (two earned) over 5-2/3 innings in the no-decision.

The B-Mets (60-41) continue their three-game series against the Sea Dogs on Tuesday night at 7:00 PM. RHP Rainy Lara takes the mound for Binghamton against RHP Luis Diaz.
