Sea Dogs Fall Again

The Portland Sea Dogs fell to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 4-2 on Saturday night. In the top of the third inning, Sebastian Espino led off with a double, putting a runner in scoring position. John Aiello and Spencer Horwitz both walked, and a wild pitch from Groome brought in Espino, handing the Fisher Cats a 1-0 lead. Portland responded in the bottom of the third against New Hampshire starter Hayden Juenger. With two outs in the inning, Rafaela hit a solo homer that squeezed inside the foul pole above the Maine Monster in left. It was his sixth of the year and tied the game 1-1. The Fisher Cats plated two runs in the top of the sixth against major league rehabber Josh Taylor. Luis De Los Santos led off with a single and Cam Eden cleared the bases with a homer to center, putting New Hampshire back in the lead, 3-1. In the bottom of the eighth, Elih Marrero led off with a double. Two outs after, Christian Koss grounded into an error by shortstop Luis De Los Santos, bringing in Marrero, making it a 3-2 score. In the top of the ninth, De Los Santos brought in an insurance run with a sacrifice fly, increasing their lead to 4-2. The Sea Dogs failed to bring any runs in during the bottom half, falling to the Fisher Cats 4-2.

UP TO WORCESTER - Prior to tonight's game, RHP Caleb Simpson and RHP Chase Shugart have been promoted to AAA Worcester. Simpson was 1-0 with a 2.92 ERA for the Sea Dogs in 10 games. He struck out 14 in 12.1 innings out of the bullpen. Shugart was on the Opening Day roster for the Sea Dogs. He was 2-2 with a 3.77 ERA in 25 appearances. He tossed 31.0 innings allowing 13 earned runs on 29 hits while walking 10 and striking out 34.

NEW RELIEVER IN THE ARM BARN - In a corresponding move for Shugart and Simpson, RHP Ryan Fernandez has been promoted from High-A Greenville Drive. He posted a 1.50 ERA in 17 appearances for Low-A Salem in 2021 before he was promoted to High-A Greenville on 8/14. So far in 2022, Fernandez is 1-2 with a 4.00 ERA and has struck out 40 opposing hitters in just 27.0 innings.

NAIL RETURNS AND THE STREAK STAYS ALIVE - LHP Brendan Nail has been activated from the Injured List prior to tonight's game. Before Nail went on the IL, he was riding an eight game shutout streak. During the streak he was 0-1 with a 0.00 ERA. In 7.2 innings, he has issued three walks while striking out eight.

TYLER DEARDEN IS ON A STREAK - Tyler Dearden currently has the longest active streak of any Sea Dogs hitter. Dearden is riding an eight-game on-base streak that dates back to June 14. During that time, he is hitting .300 (9-for-30) with a double and two runs scored. He has also driven in five runs and has worked three walks. Dearden owns an on-base percentage of .364 during this streak.

THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - July 3, 2006: David Bacani and Dustin Kelly, both position players, pitched for Portland in an ugly 15-2 loss to Trenton. This marked the first time in franchise history that two position players pitched in a game. Kelly did have some luck - pitching one scoreless inning. On this day, the Sea Dogs welcome their five millionth fan in team history.

PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Bryan Mata takes the mound for the Sea Dogs in his second start of the season for Portland. He made his 2022 debut with Portland 6/28 versus New Hampshire and tossed 3.1 innings allowed one run on two hits while walking one and striking out three. Mata made one rehab appearance with Low-A Salem 6/4 and tossed 2.0 shutout innings allowing one run (unearned) with two walks and two strikeouts. In three games with Greenville, he pitched 9.0 innings allowing four runs on six hits while walking six and striking out 15. ‚¬Å
