Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
LEWISTON, ME --- The league-leading Saint John Sea Dogs continued to roll on Sunday afternoon, skating into the Androscoggin Bank Coliseum and defeating the Lewiston MAINEiacs by a score of 7-4 to capture their fifteenth consecutive victory.
Saint John outshot Lewiston 42-20 on the day, with Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Nick Petersen leading the offensive attack by netting a hat trick to move into first place on the team with 14 goals. Michael Kirkpatrick, Steven Anthony, Mike Hoffman, and Stanislav Galiev all scored single markers for the visitors, while sophomore goalie Karel St-Laurent improved his individual record to 8-2 after turning in a 16-save performance.
At the other end of the ice, MAINEiacs net minder Adrien Lemay (35 saves) fell to 10-12 on the season while Etienne Brodeur, Michael Chaput, Sébastien Trudeau, and Matt Boyle all scored for the hosts in a losing effort.
The Sea Dogs thoroughly dominated play in the early-going, registering the first half-dozen shots on goal as the ice surface at Androscoggin Bank Coliseum appeared to be tilted towards the MAINEiacs' zone throughout the opening half of period number one.
It was Lewiston who managed to get on the scoreboard first however, as Michael Chaput deflected a Samuel Finn point shot past St-Laurent in the tenth minute of play to register his ninth goal of the year. The visitors responded a moment later, as a crease-hovering Nick Petersen jammed home a rebound produced by a long-range wrist off the stick of Gabriel Bourret to improve his 2009-10 goals total to twelve.
Import winger Stanislav Galiev then gave the Sea Dogs their first lead of the afternoon at the 17:04 mark of the opening frame, gaining control off the puck courtesy a MAINEiacs turnover in the neutral zone and skating into Lewiston territory with a full head of steam. The rookie sniper then beat Lemay through the five-hole from the slot to net his eighth career marker.
Vancouver Canucks prospect Steven Anthony doubled Saint John's lead at the 1:50 mark of the second period, working a picture-perfect two-on-one rush with line-mate Tomas Jurco prior to fooling Lemay on a backhand-forehand deke and tucking in the 13th goal of his season.
Lewiston pulled back to within one ten-and-a-half minutes later, with Matt Boyle scoring a power play goal from a inside the right face-off circle a few seconds after Adrien Lemay had stoned Mike Hoffman on a breakaway with a sensational sliding pad save to induce a dramatic swing in momentum.
Some exceptional work by Karel St-Laurent between the pipes for Saint John in the opening minutes of the third period kept the visitors' one-goal lead in tact, as the MAINEiacs exited the game's second intermission with a tremendous amount of energy.
The Sea Dogs added an insurance marker at the 11:41 mark of regulation's final frame, with Nick Petersen tipping a Michael Kirkpatrick shot past Lemay during a Saint John power play to tally his second offensive strike of the match. Lewiston managed to again reduce their deficit to one just 1:08 later however, as veteran forward Sébastien Trudeau scored on the fly from a sharp angle.
With 5:13 remaining in regulation, star winger Mike Hoffman roofed a loose puck over a sprawling Lemay to both bring an abrupt end to a lengthy scramble in the hosts' zone and restore the Sea Dogs' two-goal advantage. Saint John went up by a field goal at the behest of a man-up marker from Nick Petersen, who redirected a Simon Després shot to the back of the home team's net to put the finishing touches on the second hat trick of his major junior career.
A final-minute rebound goal by Etienne Brodeur pulled the MAINEiacs back to within two, but that would be as close as Lewiston would get as Michael Kirkpatrick added an empty-net marker in the dying seconds of the match to give the Port City's major junior squad the decision by a 7-4 final.
Up next for the Sea Dogs (23-4-1-0) is a much-anticipated Friday night matchup with the Drummondville Voltigeurs (20-4-0-2) at Harbour Station. These two nationally-ranked teams produced arguably the most exciting game of the current QMJHL season on November 20 when Saint John earned a dramatic 4-3 shootout win over the reigning league champs at the Marcel Dionne Centre. Tickets to Friday's 7:30pm showdown can be obtained by calling the arena box office at (506) 657-1234.
