August 30, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs can clinch their first playoff appearance since 1997 tonight. A Sea Dogs win or a New Britain Rock Cats (Twins) loss would assure the Sea Dogs a spot in the 2005 Eastern League Playoffs. The Sea Dogs take on the Altoona Curve (Pirates) tonight at 7:05 PM in Altoona, PA. The Rock Cats face off against the Akron Aeros (Indians) in Akron, OH at 7:05 PM.
The top two teams for each division qualify for post-season play. The Portland Sea Dogs' magic number to clinch the Northern Division title is four, any combination of Portland wins or Trenton losses. With seven games remaining, the Sea Dogs sit atop the Eastern League's Northern Division with a 74-61 (.548) record, four games ahead of second place Trenton (Yankees). The Sea Dogs have won three Northern Division titles in their 12 year history but none since 1997.
