August 30, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- Corey Ragsdale's two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning lifted the Binghamton Mets over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 6-4, in the opening game of a three-game series at Fisher Cats Ballpark Tuesday night. The loss was New Hampshire's fifth straight, leaving them clinging for dear life in the Eastern League's Northern Division playoff race.
Ragsdale drilled a 3-1 pitch from losing pitcher Bubbie Buzachero (4-4) over the centerfield fence for his eighth home run, scoring Bobby Malek (single) from first base to break open a 4-4 tie.
New Hampshire (66-70) loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning on singles from Chip Cannon and Curtis Thigpen, and an intentional walk to Miguel Negron. But Binghamton reliever Tim Lavigne induced a game-ending ground out from Brad Hassey to earn his fifth save.
Left-hander Blake McGinley (1-0), who was sent down from Triple-A Norfolk on Friday with Lavigne, pitched an inning of scoreless relief to earn his first win.
Curtis Thigpen (4) and Erik Kratz (11) each hit solo home runs for the Fisher Cats against Binghamton starter Evan MacLane (6.2 IP, 4 ER, 4 R, 7 H, 0 BB, 10 K).
Aarom Baldiris' RBI single and Brett Harper's 15th home run of the season -a two-run shot-staked Binghamton (60-76) to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning against New Hampshire starter Vince Perkins (6 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 6 K).
Ron Acuna had a two-run single to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the first inning.
The Fisher Cats and Mets play game two of their three-game Wednesday night at 6:35pm. Right-hander Ismael Ramirez (7-13, 4.08) will pitch against Binghamton righty Luz Portobanco (2-11, 7.10). The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a free Fisher Cats cap. For tickets or more information, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
