Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - It took an extra game but the Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, have advanced to the Eastern League Playoffs to defend their Eastern League title. The Sea Dogs defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays) tonight 7-4 in a one-game playoff for the final playoff spot. For the third consecutive season the Sea Dogs will face the Trenton Thunder (Yankees) in the first round of the Eastern League playoffs, which get underway tomorrow night in Trenton, New Jersey. The Sea Dogs have prevailed in both previous meetings and will attempt to become the first Eastern League team since the Vermont Expos in 1986-1988 to beat the same opponent in the Eastern League playoffs in three straight years.
Jeff Corsaletti collected four hits, including a home run and three runs scored while Andrew Pinckney hit two home runs with three RBI's to lead the Portland offense in front of 4,042 at Hadlock Field. Tommy Hottovy (4-10) earned the win, tossing five innings while allowing one run on five hits. Mike James picked up his 22nd save of the season for Portland. Kyle Yates (9-9) suffered the loss for New Hampshire.
The top two teams from each division qualify for post-season play. The Trenton Thunder (83-59) have clinched first place in the Northern Division, while Portland (71-72) has secured the second spot. In the Southern Division the Erie SeaWolves (81-59), Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, have secured first place and will face the Akron Aeros (80-61), Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, in the first round of the playoffs.
This is the sixth time in the 14-year history of the franchise that the Sea Dogs have advanced to the Eastern League playoffs. Portland has advanced to the Eastern League finals on four occasions, and won its first Eastern League title last season by defeating Akron in the deciding fifth game.
The first round of the Eastern League playoffs is a best out of five series scheduled to get underway on Wednesday, September 5th. Games one, two and five (if necessary) will be played in Trenton, New Jersey. While the Sea Dogs will host games three and four (if necessary). Games three and four are scheduled to be played at Hadlock Field on Friday, September 7th and Saturday, September 8th at 6:00 PM.
The two division series winners will square off in a best of five series for the Eastern League Championship Series. Should the Sea Dogs advance to the Championship series, the Sea Dogs would host games one and two at Hadlock Field on Tuesday, September 11th and Wednesday, September 12th at 6:00 PM. While games three, four (if necessary), and five (if necessary) would be played at the home of the Southern Division champ.
