
Sea Dogs top Fisher Cats 7-4 to earn playoff spot

Manchester, NH- Andrew Pinckney went 2-for-3 with 2 homers and Jeff Corsaletti went 4-for-5 with a homer as the Portland Sea Dogs topped the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 7-4 Tuesday night to win a one-game playoff to determine the team to face Trenton in the Northern Division finals.
Corsaletti led off the bottom of the first inning at Hadlock Field with a homer, his sixth, off starter and losing pitcher Kyle Yates (9-9). Pinckney had a solo shot off Yates in the second inning and smacked a two-run homer in the fourth, the RELCO Enlightening Play of the Game, to move the Sea Dogs out in front 5-1.
Sea Dog starter Tommy Hottovy (4-10) allowed 1 ER in 5.0 IP, allowing 5 hits, walking 2 and striking out 1. The only run the Fisher Cats managed off Hottovy came on David Smith's solo homer, his club leading 24th, to tie the game at 1-1 in the second inning.
Aaron Bates, who had an RBI single for Portland in the third inning, led off the fifth with a double, and came around to score on a single by Tony Grandillo off reliever Seth Overbey as Portland built a 6-1 lead.
The Fisher Cats (70-73) scored three runs in the 7th inning off Portland reliever Hunter Jones. Erik Kratz walked and went to third on a single by Ryan Klosterman. Dustin Majewski singled home Kratz to make it 6-2. Aaron Mathews had a sacrifice fly RBI, and after Sergio Santos walked, Ryan Cosby singled Majewski home to cut the deficit to 6-4.
Portland (71-72) added an insurance run in the 8th inning on a single by Corsaletti and an RBI double by Iggy Suarez (2-for-5).
Beau Vaughn worked 1.2 scoreless innings in relief for Portland and Sea Dog closer Mike Jones worked around a Santos single in the 9th for his 22nd save.
The loss brings an end to the season for New Hampshire. Portland will travel to Trenton to open the best-of-five Northern Division finals Wednesday night at 7:05pm. The Sea Dogs have eliminated the Thunder each of the last two seasons, earning an Eastern League title in 2006 with a Championship series victory over Akron. Akron and Erie open the Southern Division finals tomorrow night.
