SAINT JOHN, Jan 8, 2006 - The Saint John Sea Dogs have obtained 18-year-old defenceman Matthew Block from the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, in exchange for a 9th round draft pick in 2007.

The 6' 3", 183 lb., rearguard has appeared in 17 games for Chicoutimi this season and has an assist and 15 penalty minutes. He is a native of Burlington, Ontario.

"Matthew hasn't gotten a lot of playing time with Chicoutimi and we were looking for someone who will give us more depth on defence," said Bob "Tipper" LeBlanc, general manager of the Sea Dogs. "We are a bit thin on the blue line and this will allow us to give some of our kids a break once in awhile."

The Sea Dogs completed two other transactions before the QMJHL trading deadline expired today at 1 p.m.

Saint John has received an 8th round draft choice in 2007 from the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies for the rights to former Sea Dog David Starenky. Starenky had been released by the Sea Dogs this past Fall and has been playing with the Woodstock Slammers of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League.

"We are pleased to be able to give David another chance to play at the Major Junior level," said LeBlanc. "We had a deal involving David some time ago, but he chose not to report to this club. This time around, he's excited to be going to Rouyn-Noranda, a contending team."

Finally, the Sea Dogs have acquired the rights to 18-year-old goaltender Aaron Barton of the Mississauga Ice Dogs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). The 6'1", 165 lb. native of Oakville, Ontario appeared in ten games with Mississauga this season and has recorded a win, three losses, an overtime loss and a shoot-out loss.

"The plan is for Aaron to play the rest of this season with the Hawkesbury Hawks of the Central Junior A Hockey League in Ontario, come to training camp next year and fight for a position," said LeBlanc.

The Sea Dogs are on this road this coming week, visiting Baie Comeau on Wednesday and Chicoutimi on Friday. They return to action at Harbour Station next Sunday (Jan. 15) when they will host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.
