Moncton, NB - For only the second time this season, the Moncton Wildcats have lost two consecutive games, as the visiting Cape Breton Screaming Eagles downed the Moncton Wildcats 4 - 1 before 4,791 at the Moncton Coliseum on Wednesday.
Cape Breton led 2 - 0 after the first and 4 - 0 heading into the third period, to improve their record to 20 - 12 - 0 - 1 (41 pts), four points behind the Wildcats (22 - 9 - 0 - 1 (45 pts), who remain in second place in the Eastern Division.
Kevin Asselin led the Screaming Eagles with a pair of goals, his 23rd,PP and 24th,PP on the season, with singles coming from Dean Ouellet (11th) and James Shepherd (10th,PP). Brad Marchand scored the only goal of the third period, his 14th of the campaign to ruin the shutout bid of goaltender Ondrej Pavelec.
Moncton outshot Cape Breton 31 - 29, including 11 - 8 in the third period. Cape Breton led 10 - 9 in the second period, while both teams had 11 shots a piece in the opening period. Pavelec improved his record to 14 - 10, while Jhase Sniderman was tagged with his first loss in his third start, since joining the Wildcats ten days ago. On the powerplay, Cape Breton went 3 for 5, while Moncton was 1 for 6.
The game's three stars were #1 - Ondrej Pavelec, #2 - Kevin Asselin and #3 - Paul McIlveen.
Moncton continues its three game home stand on Friday, when they host the St. John's Fog Devils in a 7 pm contest at the Moncton Coliseum.
