Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY - This Friday night, October 26th, the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles will take on the Halifax Mooseheads and will be helping to fight cancer in Cape Breton. Friday's game will mark the tenth annual Pink at the Rink event. Puck drop is at 7 PM.
Every year at the "Pink at the Rink" game the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles wear pink hockey jerseys to support the Cape Breton Cancer Patient Care Fund through a jersey raffle. Spectators who wish to have a chance to win one of the coveted pink uniforms can purchase raffle tickets in the concourse of Centre 200 or from volunteer ticket sellers on game night. All proceeds from the event will be given to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation's Cape Breton Cancer Patient Care Fund. The singing of the national anthem will be performed by the all female Breton Songbirds acapella group prior to the game.
Each raffle ticket can be purchased for 5 dollars, and a total of 22 pink jerseys will be raffled off. Volunteers will be selling tickets at various locations around the arena, and a draw will take place during the third period. Winners will have a chance to come to ice level, meet the Screaming Eagles players, accept their jersey and get a photo with the player.
Ellen MacKenzie of Sydney will be dropping the puck for the ceremonial opening faceoff prior to the game. Ellen was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. She has been able to stay at home in Cape Breton for all of her chemotherapy, radiation treatments and her surgery. Ellen will be accompanied onto the ice by her five year old granddaughter Neico, who has actively been fundraising for cancer care in Cape Breton.
Ellen is very familiar with the Screaming Eagles, as Screaming Eagles players Ryan Francis and Egor Sokolov are billeting with Ellen's daughter Ashley, Neico, and Ashley's husband Kyle. Ellen and her husband own the Foodland grocery store in Sydney Mines and have never had to leave their 50+ employees as result of the care that is available to her in Cape Breton.
"With cancer care a priority here in Cape Breton, we're thrilled that the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles have been helping over the past nine years," says Brad Jacobs, CEO of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. "With more than $88,500 raised to support cancer patients in Cape Breton through the Pink at the Rink event, the Eagles are making a significant impact on their community. The need has never been greater. We thank the Eagles and all of their fans for their amazing support." Since 2005, the Cancer Patient Care Fund has dispersed more than $1,900,000 back to cancer patients. More than 35 patients use the fund every month, and more than 150 patients use the Cancer Centre every day. In 2017 there were 1951 new diagnoses of cancer in Cape Breton. Funding is used to help combat pharmacy costs, travel costs, lodging, dental and household costs for patients.
