Charlottetown Islanders News Release
It took a few games longer than expected, but Brett Budgell has finally broken out.
He and his linemates Nikita Alexandrov and Derek Gentile combined for six points as the Charlottetown Islanders defeated the Acadie-Bathurst Titan 6-1 in a Wednesday night road tilt.
As has been the trend throughout their winning streak, the Islanders put the puck on the net early and often. Titan netminder Tyriq Outen was up to task, stopping everything that came his way throughout the first period.
Xavier Fortin would finally find a crack in the foundation as the first period drew closer to the end. The 16 year-old rookie would gather a rebound in front of the net and tuck it underneath the paddle of a sprawling Outen for his first career QMJHL goal.
Budgell would get his second goal of the season midway through the second period. On a shorthanded rush, the 6'0 Newfoundlander would throw a puck on net that took a friendly bounce and ended up behind Outen. For Budgell, that would be his first goal in eight games.
The trio of Budgell, Alexandrov, and Gentile were on fire all night, spending what felt like the entire night in the offensive zone. Alexandrov would eventually capitalize in the third period, firing a laser of a wrist shot high glove side to extend the lead to 3-0.
Alexandrov wasn't done there; on a delayed penalty, Derek Gentile would make a great individual effort to shake free of a defender before sliding a cross-crease pass right on the tape to Alexandrov. He'd make no mistake to score his eighth goal of the season.
As the game neared it's end, the Islanders wouldn't let up. Cole Edwards would add his second goal in as many games off a stretch pass from fellow Kingston native Hunter Drew. Thomas Casey would join in on the fun 30 seconds later with a beautiful end-to-end rush.
Despite the lopsided score, the Titan refused to lay down. Cole Rafuse would get one back for the home team on the powerplay late in the game, but that's as close as they would come as the Charlottetown Islanders would win their fifth straight game.
Alexander Dersch, Colin Van Den Hurk, and Thomas Casey would all add multi-point games alongside Budgell, Gentile, and Alexandrov. Dakota Lund-Cornish wasn't tested often, but stood tall when called upon, making 15 saves for the victory.
