Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

ALTOONA, PA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels scratched a run across in the ninth inning to avoid a four-game sweep as they clipped the Altoona Curve, 5-4, on Sunday night at Blair County Ballpark. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Squirrels.

Tyler La Torre led off the ninth for the Squirrels and was walked by Curve right-hander Ramon Aguero. Clay Timpner followed and delivered a hit-and-run single into right field to move La Torre to third. A batter later, Brock Bond sent a ground ball to first base which scored La Torre with the eventual winning run. Aguero (2-5) took the loss for Altoona.

Richmond then spent three pitchers to secure the win, as right-hander Adrian Martin got the first out, left-hander David Quinowski got the second and right-hander Daryl Maday finished the game for his first save of the season.

Chase d'Arnaud led off the ballgame for Altoona and sparked the Curve with a single against Squirrels' left-hander Clayon Tanner. Josh Harrison replaced him on the bases with a fielder's choice and promptly stole second and third base on consecutive pitches. Hector Gimenez brought him in for a 1-0 lead withe a two-out single.

Richmond responded quickly against Curve righty Jared Hughes. Thomas Neal led off the second inning and launched his 12th home run of the season, into the bleacher seats in left field, to tie the game, 1-1. Sharlon Schoop followed and reached on an error on d'Arnaud. Two batters later, Timpner delivered a two-out RBI single to give Richmond the lead, 2-1.

The Squirrels plated two more runs against Hughes in the third after Hughes hit the lead-off man, Bond. Brad Boyer followed with a triple to the alley in right-center field and Bond's run made it 3-1. A Conor Gillaspie groundout brought in Boyer to stretch the lead to 4-1.

The lead was lost in the fifth, as Tanner walked Hughes on four pitches to start trouble. d'Arnaud launched his second home run of the series to left field to cut the lead to a lone run, 4-3. Harrison followed and made it back-to-back blasts when he went deep to left to tie the game again, 4-4.

Neither starter factored in the decision as Tanner left after the trouble in the fifth. He worked four-plus innings, conceding four earned runs on nine hits. Hughes lasted through the sixth inning, charged with four runs -- three earned -- on six hits.

David Mixon worked three scoreless innings of relief for Richmond following Tanner, and Andy Sisco worked a perfect eighth inning. Sisco (3-4) earned the win for Richmond.

The Squirrels' road trip continues as they travel to Erie, PA, to open a four-game series with the Erie SeaWolves (Detroit Tigers) at Jerry Uht Park on Monday night at 7:05 PM. LHP Jake Stevens (4-3, 2.38) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Adam Wilk (1-0, 0.00) for Erie.
