Rock Cats Fall to Bowie

New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Bowie's Xavier Avery delivered a three-run homer and finished with four RBI to lead the Baysox to a 6-3 victory over the Rock Cats on Sunday afternoon.

New Britain's Bruce Pugh started off his Double-A debut on a roll - retiring the first six batters he faced - but the third inning proved problematic for the right-hander. Pugh walked Caleb Joseph to open the top of the third and issued a one-out walk to Jonathan Tucker. Avery then hit a three-run homer to right field that put the Baysox on top, 3-2. Bowie looked to do more damage in the inning when Ryan Adams delivered a two-out single and Joseph Mahoney followed with a double. Adams tried to score on the hit but center fielder Joe Benson fired a strike to cutoff man Chris Cates who threw to catcher Tobias Streich to nab Adams at the plate.

Bowie tacked on three more runs in the fourth, including an RBI single by Greg Miclat. Avery rounded out the inning with a sacrifice fly RBI to center field for a 6-2 advantage.

Pugh (0-1) finished with six runs on eight hits through 5 1/3 innings. He walked five while striking out three. Steven Blevins also made his Rock Cats debut and fired 3 2/3 shutout innings. He limited the Baysox to two hits while striking out three.

The Rock Cats opened the game by taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Juan Portes and Chris Parmelee reached base on back-to-back singles with one out before a throwing error by pitcher Ryohei Tanaka allowed Portes to score. Steve Singleton added an RBI sacrifice fly for the 2-0 lead.

Evan Bigley hit a solo home run in the fifth for the Rock Cats.

Tanaka (7-12) scattered seven hits and allowed one earned run in five innings. Jose Diaz walked two in the ninth but escaped the jam to notch his second save.
