August 29, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats salvaged a split of the four-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs with a 6-3 win Sunday in front of 7,594 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The Fisher Cats now hold an 8-7 edge in the season-series against the Sea Dogs with four more meetings slated on the schedule.

The Fisher Cats (75-57) offense put up enough support, highlighted by home runs from Jonathan Jaspe and Eric Thames, for the pitching staff to secure the victory. The Sea Dogs gave the home crowd a scare in the ninth, scoring two runs and loading the bases with no outs, but the Fisher Cats escaped with the victory.

The Sea Dogs (63-70) struck first in the top of the second to take the 1-0 advantage. Ryan Lavarnway doubled and Ray Chang singled to start the frame. A 6-4-3 double play minimized the damage even though it plated Lavarnway for the game's initial run.

The Fisher Cats answered to take the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Three consecutive singles by Luis Sanchez, Darin Mastroianni and Adeiny Hechavarria did the damage. No. 9 hitter Sanchez started the rally with one out and scored on Hechavarria's base-knock, while Mastroianni came around on a 6-3 ground out.

New Hampshire starter Zach Stewart only pitched three innings, allowing the one run on three hits with one strikeout. The Fisher Cats then turned to David Purcey, who threw a 1-2-3 fourth inning with two strikeouts, as he continued his MLB rehab assignment.

Kyle Weiland got the loss for Portland after throwing five innings, and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three.

The Fisher Cats added four runs in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of home runs. Jaspe started the scoring spree with a solo-shot, his third of the season. Thames followed with a three-run homerun, plating Callix Crabbe, who reached on a walk, and Mastroianni, who reached on a single, to bring the score to 6-1. Thames' poke came on a 1-1 offering, and added to his team-high of 26 for the season---giving him 101 RBI on the season.

Ronald Uviedo (5-5) kept Portland quiet until the ninth inning. The Venezuelan hurler went four-plus innings, allowing two base runners through his first four innings of work before allowing the first three to reach in the top of the ninth on two walks and an error. Alan Farina notched his fourth save of the year, even though he allowed two inherited runners to score by walking and hitting a batter with the bases loaded to bring the Sea Dogs to within 6-3.

The homestand continues on Monday with the first game of a four-game set against the Harrisburg Senators, Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. New Hampshire right-hander Randy Boone (4-9, 3.65) will get the ball, and take on Harrisburg starter Brad Peacock (2-1, 3.72). Fisher Cats Pre-Game begins at 6:15 pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman.
