Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
Niles, OH-One night after suffering their worst loss of the season, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers rebounded with their best offensive game of the year. The Scrappers pounded out a season high 18 hits on their way to a 14-7 win over the Lowell Spinners.
Lowell would take the early lead 1-0 in the first inning. The Spinners would get a run on an RBI single from Ryan Scott. It was the first run allowed by Scrappers' starter Shane Bieber, this year's fourth round draft pick by the Indians, who was making his professional debut.
The Scrappers would answer right back with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a lead they wouldn't give up. Andrew Calica would tie the game with a sacrifice fly to score Gabriel Mejia who doubled to start the inning. Calcia would then score the go ahead run on an RBI single from Gavin Collins to put the Scrappers up 2-1.
The teams would exchange runs in the second and top of the third innings before the Scrappers would pull away.
In the bottom of the third inning the Scrappers would send 14 batters to the plate on their way to an eight run inning. The big hits in the inning would come from Erlin Cerda, Collins and Yonathan Mendoza. Cerda would double to drive in two runs while Collins would deliver two RBI singles in the inning. Mendoza would connect on his first homerun of the season, a two run homer to right. By the time the inning came to an end, the Scrappers led 11-2.
Lowell would answer with four runs in the fourth and a single run in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough as the Scrappers would score three more times over the final five innings to pull away with a 14-7 win.
The Scrappers set season highs for runs in an inning (8), hits in a game (18) and tied the season high for runs in a game (14).
Bieber started and took a no decision in 2.0 innings of work. He allowed one earned run on two hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out two. Luis Jimenez would then go 1.2 innings in relief. Jimenez allowed five runs, all earned, on five hits. He struck out two. Ryan Colegate (2-2) earned the win in 2.1 innings. He allowed one earned run on four hits. Colegate struck out two. Argenis Angulo (1) earned the three inning save over the final three innings of the game. He allowed just three hits while striking out five.
