GRANVILLE, W.V. - CF Clark Eagan's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth propelled West Virginia to a 4-3 win on Friday night from Monongalia County Ballpark. The victory secures West Virginia's third win in a row.
Black Bears' starter LHP Cam Vieaux tossed the first four innings scoreless, allowing just one hit until the fifth inning. Similar to last night, the Black Bears jumped ahead of the Tigers early in the contest. An RBI groundout from SS Stephen Alemais in the bottom of the third gave West Virginia a 1-0 lead. Vieaux allowed three earned runs over five innings with four strikeouts.
Connecticut, though, would respond in the top of the fifth inning. An RBI sacrifice fly from 2B Will Savage, RF Cole Bauml's RBI double and an RBI single off the bat of DH Blaise Salter pushed the Tigers in front, 3-1. But, the Black Bears would tie the score in the bottom half on an RBI sacrifice fly from Alemais and an RBI double off the bat of LF Hunter Owen.
Reliever LHP Cristian Mota entered on the mound in the sixth inning and hurled two scoreless innings. Black Bears' manager Wyatt Toregas would go to the bullpen once again as reliever RHP Billy Roth earned his first win of the year hurling the final two innings scoreless.
In the ninth, DH Matt Diorio started the frame with a leadoff double. Then, 2B Kevin Mahala's bunt single set the scene for Eagan's one out game-winning single to centerfield, scoring Diorio.
Tigers' reliever RHP John Hayes entered in the eighth inning and received the loss allowing one earned run through 1.1 innings. Leading the way for the Black Bears offensively was RF Ty Moore and Mahala who each had two hits. Salter went 2-for-5 with an RBI as Connecticut was outhit by West Virginia 10-6.
West Virginia (17-17) will battle Connecticut (20-14) in the final game of the series tomorrow night at 7:05 PM from Monongalia County Ballpark on Star Wars Night. -WVBB- All the best, Jackie Riggleman Assistant General Manager West Virginia Black Bears NY-Penn League Class A Affiliate Pittsburgh Pirates 304-293-7184 Jriggleman@westvirginiablackbears.com [cid:9DA8FA7F-1AF4-4474-A73A-5F26B6565731]
